CDC Director on Ebola: 'The Only Thing Like This Has Been AIDS'
NBC News ^ | October 9th 2014 | Elizabeth Chuck

The widening Ebola epidemic is reminiscent of the health threat caused by AIDS, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday, urging action so Ebola "is not the world's next AIDS."

"In the 30 years I've been working in public health, the only thing like this has been AIDS," CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden said at a World Bank and International Monetary Fund annual meeting in Washington, D.C., where many countries pledged funds and services to try to stem the virus ravaging West Africa. "And we have to work now so that this is not the world's next AIDS."

AIDS also started in Africa, and experts agree it spread to cause a global pandemic because the world was slow to recognize it and fight it. Many leaders denied the virus caused the disease, and others blamed the patients for catching it.

Frieden spoke a day after Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, died in a Dallas hospital. Meanwhile, in West Africa, 8,033 people have been diagnosed with Ebola and 3,879 have died, the World Health Organization said Wednesday, adding that the true numbers were almost definitely higher.

AIDS has killed 36 million people since it started a pandemic in the 1980s. The human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS currently infects about 35 million people. Like Ebola, HIV is spread through bodily fluids.

His language is purely directed at the “low information” voters. And these statements tell me that they are NOT serious about containing this disease. Every man for himself...

I must confess that when I went back to see who is actually making the statement I think your analysis may actually be correct.

Frieden is the same idiot

Occasionally when he speaks I detect an accent - is he another foreigner trying to kill America?

Yeah, comparing Ebola to AIDS implies that it can be avoided by avoiding its causes. Ebola does not seem to be a disease that can be avoided if one crosses its path.

I've been adding this thought on every thread: Has any nation in history before this intentionally brought a pandemic disease into its nation? The first rule of stopping a disease is containing it. The EU and the US are way past insane on this issue; our governments have become suicidal for their nations.

AIDS is very difficult to catch, and it takes 20 years to kill you, and there are drugs that help.

Ebola is very easy to catch and you die within a month and there is no medication for it

Except for that they are so much alike its spooky!

Way to pander...

"AIDS [...] spread to cause a global pandemic" No it didn't - for the most part, [outside Africa, I meant to say] only perverts and needle-sharers got it (and a very few unfortunate heterosexual partners of theirs).

Also people who got blood transfusions

Yes, a few of them too.

Yup, and there was that one young woman who was deliberately infected by her gay, HIV+ dentist (trying to spread it to heteros to gain sympathy and funding for a cure).

Probably more like her too, that have never been identified.

In fact she was a UF student when I went there.

From http://www.aids.gov/federal-resources/around-the-world/global-aids-overview/

“”HIV is the world’s leading infectious killer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 36 million people have died since the first cases were reported in 1981 and 1.6 million people died of HIV/AIDS in 2012.””

But its politically correct because it could be conveniently blamed on Reagan.

Ebola is being identified with Obama. Well it takes one to know one.

Having lived in San Francisco, I do know people who have AIDS, and some who died from it. At the beginning of the AIDs epidemic, they did not really know how it was transmitted. Very sad. I felt so sorry for AIDs victims, and also afraid for my own health. (I’m female). After it was determined to be sexually transmitted, many of the gays kept on having unprotected sex. No longer could I feel sorry for them; enraged is more like it.

AIDS is now contained; anyone who comes down with it volunteers.

Ebola is an equal-opportunity virus, much more deadly and far easier to spread.

Ebola has so far to go though before it becomes comparable in numbers of dead.

People forget that it has been killing people since 1976 and that it’s almost 40 year total is still way below a single flu season in America.

AIDs is hardly contained in Africa.

HIV/AIDS is primarily a disease of Africans, gay men and drug abusers using contaminated needles. Think of it as a lifestyle killer disease.

Ebola on the other hand, is an equal opportunity offender and a modern day Captain Trips.

They tried to state that AIDS was “equal opportunity”, in order to force people to care that perverts are killing each other with a deadly disease.

Because survivors continue to shed virus in semen for an unknown period of time, this disease could end up being more like HIV than anyone is admitting.
