the Bostonian Society will finally crack open the 113-year old time capsule...

Was the idea in 1901 to have this opened after a number of years, rounded to the nearest 113?

Well, I guess they could have chosen 226 or 339... so we are lucky to be here in 2014, after a mere 113 years to see what's inside.

“Heather Leet, director for development with the Bostonian Society, told BostInno in an email that the time capsule wasn’t confirmed to exist until late in September when it was brought to Skylight Studios in Woburn.”

It sounds like they were probably supposed to open it after 100 years, but it ended up being ‘forgotten’. Seems the statue was removed and in storage somewhere for a while before the capsule was tracked down.
