Stepping up efforts to stop the Ebola epidemic from spreading widely in the United States, federal authorities and officials in Chicago on Wednesday announced preventive measures that will include more intense health screening for airline passengers arriving at O'Hare International Airport from West African countries.

When screening starts at O'Hare, federal personnel will staff a triage station in the international arrivals area and run passports of passengers coming from Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone to determine whether they've been in affected regions, Hasbrouck said. Passengers will fill out questionnaires and may be subject to fever detection, he said. Temperatures will be taken with a non-contact thermometer, federal officials said.

Profiling is good, but security should be beefed up at all international airports. If I was traveling to the USA after Ebola exposure, whether for nefarious reasons or for free high-quality treatment, I would choose the airport with the weakest screening. Even our weakest screening should be effective, while the highest risk entry points should have the best we can create.
Only problem is that these people are beyond the sensical approach of actually severely restricting travel from the infected nations to the U.S.. These screening procedures will easily fail to spot infected individuals who are asymptomatic, or who lie when questioned.
Who would lie on a questionaire? Certainly there has never been a case of someone lying about being in an ebola hot zone right?

Good news for all the people that spent hours on the plane with the person they find out has a fever when they land. Are we this effing stupid now?
I have a better idea. Let’s not let anyone from an epidemic area in until the ebola outbreak is dealt with properly.
It’s a whole lot easier to screen potential carriers when you don’t have any potential carriers to screen.

Ebola is worse than SARS. I wonder why we don't treat it as seriously, and suspect it's because we are treating it as an affirmative action disease because of the African connection.

I have an idea. Why don’t we screen them before they board the aircraft in London / Frankfurt / Amsterdam / Paris etc etc.
The dike is leaking through hundreds of holes. We will put fingers in 5 of those holes to stop the leak. Ridiculous in the extreme.
Very reassuring that no international flights can directly access the US at any airport other than those busy east coast hubs. (scratching my head cuz I’m sure United is still running a direct Lagos to Houston...countless South American flights to Dallas, Houston and Miami daily.)We are in the best of hands.
This beefing up is not good enough. They need to stop taking passengers here who have recently been to the affected countries. Of course, as the disease spreads through other countries that will not catch everyone, and beefing up may be needed to stop any infected from those areas as well.

Okay well this is a start but I don’t like the “may” in that sentence, also I’ve heard non-contact thermometers are notoriously inaccurate (they mean the forehead wands right?)also how does this cut down on those who have either taken something to suppress the fever, or like Duncan, not yet be that symptomatic? I know they probably feel they’re doing the best they can, not being able to close off travel from those areas and all, but I still think some infected people will get through.
This will be an tragic failure like everything obama’s “logic” touches.
I do not understand how the CDC can approve this. If I, with the education of registered nurse, can see how backwards this plan is, why don’t the geniuses in Washington?
These possible cases of ebola that they are screening out AFTER a long international flight of incubating in an enclosed plane, could have exposed dozens of innocents . . . and then what???? Only a President Obola could think this is a good idea . . .

Most infected travelers are not sick yet. Exclusion or quarantine are viable options, this is just PR.
If this is being handled in whole or part by the TSA just remember: To date they havent detected or caught a single terrorism nor have they detected the contrived incursions. I believe their grade is a 0. Also remember it was a ‘compassionate conservative’ who signed them into existence.
