The mosquito salivary glands have to transmit the virus from the blood stream. Here's what they say in the science paper abstract: One important step in the transmission of most vector-borne diseases is the entry of the disease agent into the salivary glands of its arthropod vector. The salivary glands of blood-feeding arthropods produce a complex mixture of molecules that facilitate blood feeding by inhibition of the host haemostasis, inflammation and immune reactions. Pathogen entry into salivary glands is a receptor-mediated process, which requires molecules on the surface of the pathogen and salivary gland. In most cases, the nature of these molecules remains unknown

Short answer: nobody knows.

The money quotes:

"Yet CDC Director Tom Frieden, another expert, believes that “[t]he Ebola virus becoming airborne is possible but unlikely.”

"Unlikely isn’t impossible. Given the consequences of “choosing poorly,” it would be more prudent for government agencies and virology experts to err on the side of caution in managing this outbreak. This includes not only in handling infected patients, but also in commonsense measures such as travel restrictions in and out of hot zones, securing the U.S. borders, and quarantining any suspicious immigrants or travelers. Otherwise, the “settled science” of Ebola transmission may turn out to be anything but."

Waiting for the WH to institute these measures . . counting 1, 2, 3, . . .

“No one has the faintest idea how he became infected. I’m sure that CDC flunkie will have a re-assuring answer.”

Probably went like this

Here sign these papers

Ok You have a pen?

One thing that worries me is different resistance to the virus amongst populations with a different genetic background.
Most people are familiar with the story about how Europeans brought their diseases with them to the Americas. This resulted in the decimation of the native Americans from nothing more exotic than the common cold in many cases. Ebola is native to a region that is far removed from Europe and people of European ancestry. It is possible that Caucasians are as defenseless to Ebola as the native Americans were to the flu.
The survivors of the earliest epidemics passed on their superior genes making each successive epidemic less lethal. Also consider that two of the countries where Ebola is currently active were settled by former slaves. Presumably they would have a higher non African genetic component to their population. This could explain why this epidemic is more lethal than past ones.

No. That’s not how this works.

It kills about 70% of those who get. Black, white, red, yellow. It’s a virus. It doesn’t care what you look like. If you have red blood cells of the human species, it wants to live in you and kill you.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

I never signed a suicide pact with Obama. Can’t we organize an email and phone calling effort to coerce Obama and the CDC to suspend flights from the “hot zone” until this thing burns out? Does anyone here have an email list to get this effort started?
