A Spanish nurse who treated an Ebola victim in Madrid is thought to be the first person to have contracted the virus outside Africa, health officials say.
The nurse tested positive for Ebola in initial tests and doctors are awaiting final results, according to reports.
She was part of the team that treated Spanish priest Manuel Garcia Viejo, who died of Ebola on 25 September.

Either she was stupid and careless.....
Or this virus is becoming FAR more virulent... Airborne even?
This is assuming that a hospital in Madrid (supposedly a more advanced western nation) took every precaution necessary with a patient they KNEW had the deadly disease...
You can bet US nurses are watching this very closely. A few more cases like this, or a US nurse treating an Ebola patient becomes infected, and we will start to see nurses leaving hospitals treating Ebola
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
In one account WHO refused to respond to questions.
This priest was flown to Spain in one of the protection tents, received modern dedicated care by HCW and Dr’s well aware of the dangers, and yet....time to consider WHO/CDc protocols inadequate to the reality on the ground.
Continued obfuscation, playing with numbers, and outright lies and playing to political correctness virtually guarantees a wildfire event if more than a hand full of infections occurs in Europe or here. How the hell do WHO/CDC expect trust when their positions and statements are contradicted by reality on an almost daily basis.
See my tagline and remember, “If it’s wet and not yours, don’t touch it.”
I have thought about this. I would understand them not wanting to contract the disease and worse - bring it home to their own families. Also consider if it does spread, various hospital will be hit with it, you would never know if your hospital is next. Medical personnel will be running for their lives. If they are able to keep it contained there won't be a problem but if it starts randomly showing up in various places, who could blame them for running?
I wouldn’t blame them one bit. There are some who would work, knowing it is a death sentence. But most are just trying to raise their family, and will not endanger their children.
A co-worker’s sib is a HCW at Texas Health Presby.
CDC took over the labs there and removed all the test equipment that tested Thomas Duncan for Malaria “...for decontamination.” (Both HCW and I suspect HazMat disposal is more likely)
The entire lab area is now CDC territory with no Texas Health Presby local med-techs allowed in.
The local HCW are “freaking out” despite public face of professional competence the hospital management, Dallas politicos and CDC are putting out in their “Risk Messaging.”
People talking about HCW walking out if local Dallas HCW get Ebola seem spot on, from what I have gathered fron the co-worker.
“. But most are just trying to raise their family, and will not endanger their children.”

Some cops abandoned their post and went home to be with their families during Katrina and they were criticised.
(I’m not talking about the thief cops.)

The photo I saw of her looked like she was very elderly.
A photo of the doc

Why would the CDC, when it has been maintained that 'any hospital can handle this' shoulder the locals aside and sequester their equipment...unless they lied, they are covering their lie, and even the act of providing adequate BSL-4 training and equipment to the appropriate staff would betray the lie?

Either she was stupid and careless.....Or this virus is becoming FAR more virulent...
The doctor who contracted Ebola from Patrick Sawyer, and survived, remembers only touching his IV bag - without gloves - and him, once he’d passed - with double gloves.
An excellent recounting of her story/experience is posted, here....
