I believe we should have killed Hussein back in 1991 when we were first at the doorstep to Baghdad. Without us then having to stick around in Saudi Arabia to enforce the No Fly Zone, Al Qeada wouldn't have had near the pull it did to recruit wild-eyed Muslims to take up learning to fly planes into buildings.

It would have saved so many in the long run...

I’ve often thought the same thing AB.

Every time I hear that silly mantra “No weapons of mass destruction” I want to scream.

YEAH BUT THEY HAD THAT THUG SADDAM HUSSEIN WHO WAS HUNG BY HIS OWN PEOPLE!

THAT’s why we went into Iraq....Saddam should have been taken out when the first Bush went in...let’s not forget that Saddam invaded Kuwait.

Instead, over and over, no weapons of mass destruction. And never does a Republican speak up and mention the lovely Saddam. Why couldn’t a Republican with more than air between the legs ask the dolt mentioning the lack of WMD....to the effect: “You think we should have left Saddam Hussein in charge?”?

I’m jus’ sayin’.

And yeah, that No Fly Zone....wonder how much that cost us taxpayers to keep up.

I blame Jimmy Carter...

To ensure a free flow of oil, the west drew arbitrary borders and installed dictators who put an end to at least hundreds of years if not a thousand years of tribal warfare. Many lives were saved in the region at the expense of a relatively small number killed by the dictatorships.

Now the region is back to tribal warfare. With the new twist of tribal warfare with the west.

The attempt to bring modern democracy to medievals wasn't worth one American life, never mind thousands. Carter should never have thrown the Shah of Iran under the bus.

"Jimmy Carter Can Only Blame Himself"

"Facing an Islamic revolution, the Shah appealed to Carter for help. On November 4, 1978 U.S. National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski called the Shah and said the United States would "back him to the hilt." This would never be the case. Brzezinski insisted to Carter that the U.S. must encourage the Shah to "brutally suppress the revolution". State Department officials believed Carter should reach out to the Revolutionaries in order to smooth the transition to a new government. This was a deciding moment in world history. Carter decided not to take either recommendation and to this very day, the world is suffering the consequences of his indecisiveness."

Indeed, Alas. One of the biggest turning points in American history was when America refused to look beyond "the highway of death" and to finish the Gulf War.

Our loss then of the stomach for war would have been equivalent to Ike's pulling the troops off of Omaha Beach, and cancelling the D-Day Invasion.
