Tales of torture, mutilation and rape as ISIS targets key town of Kobani [As Turkey watches]

As Islamic State militants closed in on the besieged Syrian city of Kobani on Saturday, Turkey lined up its soldiers near the border but continued to refuse to intervene to repel the extremist advance.

On a day that should have been one of the happiest in the Muslim calendar, the festival of Eid al-Adha, hundreds of Turks and refugee Kurds spent the morning at the border with Syria, watching helplessly as shells rained down on a city many once called home.

Turkish police appeared uneasy at the size of the crowd gathered near a fragile border fence and fired teargas grenades to disperse them, adding the crack of smaller explosions to the rumbling of the Isis advance.

When the crowd formed again, armoured personnel carriers and water cannon arrived, and riot police set to again. It was a mournfully surreal scene, with the battle for Kobani as the backdrop for the standoff with police.

Mostafa Kader was one of the restive crowd, grieving for an uncle who had been beheaded by militants, and a young mother and her daughter both brutally raped and murdered.

Kader fled 10 days ago, leaving his village, which lies 16km from Kobani centre, in the small hours of the morning. He and his wife took their five-year-old, their toddler and what little else they could carry.

You just know the non interference by Turkey is the deal they struck to get back their diplomats. Probably a threat to launch a few terror attacks within Turkey itself is enough to get their meek compliance.

I wonder how long it will be before ISIS start injecting their suicide killers with ebola and send them to NY, Washington, Detroit, etc?

Clip from a link:

Islamic State (Isis) militants have advanced to within a few miles of the Syrian-Kurdish city of Kobani, triggering a renewed stream of refugees seeking to cross the border into Turkey. Local Kurdish fighters said that the city was “preparing for urban warfare” and that “Kobani was prepared for the worst”. Abdullah Öcalan, the jailed leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ party (PKK), warned that if there was a massacre of Kurds in Kobani the peace process between the PKK and the Turkish government would halt.

Looks like a blood bath coming their way in Krobani. Some 200k people in jeopardy while US/Turkey sit and watch, give vocal support but that's it.

ISIS is working to accomplish what Turkiye would like to do. In that ISIS is not a rival of Turkiye but rather a precursor, doing the dirty work as it were.

Exactly. Erdogan is an Islamist, he just hasn’t gotten as far with his program.

However, I think there is going to be some conflict between the two in the future, since there can be only one “caliphate.” It will be either Baghdad or a revived Ottoman Empire in Istanbul. ISIS is doing the dirty work now, aiming at setting up a new caliphate of Baghdad, but I think there will be a conflict if they actually achieve it.

The outrage from the media all over the world is deafening.

It is as if they had them strip naked and make a human pyramid, or something like that...

Erdogan is more favorably disposed to ISIS than he Kurds. He’s playing Obama which is pretty easy to do since he’s more concerned with the illusion than the fact.

I suspect ISIS does not yet understand what the Turks are planning for them. If ISIS manages to secure a credible Caliphate, Erdogan means to abscond with it to Istanbul.
Then Turkiye will have avoided the international onus of the Conquest but will reap the fruits, maybe with the thanks of the West, for ending the Baghdad venture and ISIS. The Turks will be less colorful in their dealings with ISIS when the time comes and will calm the fears of the West by being relatively civilized about it all but Erdogan (perhaps he will take the name Suleiman or Othman) means to have the Caliphate and/or something like the old Empire.

Turkiye with the riches of Arab oil will be a very dangerous customer, more so than ISIS because it will assume a credible pose of being Civilized and will be much more crafty in its financial dealings.

There have been as many as three simultaneous Caliphates in the past
