A travel ban to the countries facing an Ebola outbreak could paradoxically make the problem worse, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Tom Frieden said during a Saturday press conference.

SUSPECTED IMPORTED CASES
The following countries are testing travelers for Ebola:

4 October:

Canada: 2 October - A person who recently travelled to West Africa is being tested for Ebola in a hospital in Toronto. Test results were negative for Ebola.

Guinea-Bissau: 30 August - Unconfirmed reports about eight people quarantined in a hospital in Gabu, who entered the region from Guinea Conakry. There are unconfirmed reports on 10 September of three people with suspected Ebola being monitored in Bafata Hospital. The three people are all citizens of Guinea-Conakry.

Malawi: On 28 August two refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo suspected of having Ebola symptoms escaped isolation before being fully examined by health officials. The refugees entered Malawi at the Songwe border, Karonga district and their current location is unknown.

Maldives: On 30 September, out of an abundance of precaution, a Nigerian tourist to Maldives was quarantined. The man displayed no signs of illness or Ebola symptoms.

Rwanda: On 29 September the Rwandan Ministry of Health discounted reports of a suspected case in Muhima Hospital. They explained that the person did not die from Ebola and that they had tested negative for the disease.

United States: 3 October - a patient with Ebola-like symptoms is in isolation in a Washington D.C. hospital, “out of an abundance of caution”. The patient had a history of recent travel to Nigeria. Reports on 4 October excluded Ebola in the Washington patient. A patient in Sarasota, Florida was placed into isolation but the person has been labeled as “highly unlikely” to have the virus as they had not visited any of the high-risk countries in West Africa.

2 October - A patient in Honolulu, Hawaii is being managed in a medical facility in isolation. The Hawaii State Department of Health has ruled out Ebola (PDF).

1 October: Another patient has been admitted to a children’s hospital in Utah. Test result is unlikely to be Ebola but its done out of an abundance of caution.

Tom Frieden is obviously incompetent, perhaps corrupt and maybe even mentally ill. He should be fired immediately.

Obama seems to attract folks just like himself.

Our country can NOT take 2 more years of this nonsense.

Tom Frieden has spent a bit of time at the heart of the epidemic over the last two months; he has seen a plague of biblical proportions first hand. He has looked at the outputs from the models, and understands one thing that has likely pushed him to the edge of madness-- if we don't stop this NOW in Africa, and there are a million cases by the end of winter as the models predict, there is NOTHING that will stop this from becoming a global pandemic that will significantly depopulate every continent on earth at a scale we have not seen since 1918. Main effort number one is in the hands of GEN Rodriguez, someone who in my personal experience was an admirable commander at his last post in FORSCOM. His task is to build seventeen 100 bed isolation centers in Liberia and Sierra Leone in the next few weeks so doctors can stop sending patients home to spread the virus further, and instead be isolated and cared for, while also setting up training centers to instruct people how to isolate themselves at home and train replacement medical personnel.

Frieden probably hasn't slept for weeks, he has likely thought about all of the options-- stopping travel to the US is probably not the highest priority, because of the gravity of what is happening in Africa, and what that will cause to the US next year if we fail. He knows the corruption in Africa, and that trying to stop visas will just lead to a massive exodus under false papers to nearby countries spreading the disease further. He knows that we can shut down air travel one way, but the airlines need nearly every seat full both ways to make their break-even and when it's no longer profitable they will stop all flights both ways. This will prevent sustainment of the main effort and precipitate a mad rush out, to neighboring countries so far not affected by the outbreak, and beyond, to Europe and the middle east. I understand how poorly the reality of the gravity of this situation is communicated, and yes they look like reckless idiots with no concern for the US, but the knee jerk reaction to assume that they are evil and trying to destroy the US may be inaccurate. This is a complex problem, and for every action there are predictable second and third order effects-- what seems like a simple solution may have unintended consequences that could be catastrophic. These folks are in the fight of their lives, and they don't have time for informative dialog with the public to spoon feed us all of the trade offs in the decision making process. Some of the administration's leadership are idiots, or arrogant oafs, but I think Frieden and GEN Rodriguez are truly trying to do the best they can in a very difficult situation. Donning asbestos suit now...

So, if it is so safe, maybe the CDC director would like to serve as a greeter shaking hands with each new arrival at the JFK or Atlanta international terminal.

Put the aid workers on our military planes and fly them in and out of these Ebola ravaged countries..-Tom

The simple logic of a Freeper. However, that simple logic is correct.

All flights from West Africa should be banned. We can and should have flights by our military or commercial charter to deliver aid and equipment and personnel to the stricken areas. When these personnel return home they must be put in 21 day quarantine to ensure they do not have the virus.
