Exclusive – Rand Paul: Obama 'Downplaying' Ebola Threat to America
Big Government ^ | 10/3/2014 | Matthew Boyle

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said he fears the rapidly escalating Ebola crisis could become a “worldwide pandemic” and criticized President Obama for failing to forcefully confront it.

“They’re downplaying and underplaying the risk of this,” Paul said in an interview with Breitbart News backstage at an event where he endorsed Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) for re-election.

“They keep emphasizing that it’s so hard to transmit. Well if it’s so hard to transmit why are doctors getting it with masks, gloves, boots and hats—the whole works?” he asked.

“Could we have a worldwide pandemic? The Spanish flu in 1918 killed 21 million people, the plague in the 14th century killed 25 million people; I’m not saying that’s going to happen, I don’t know what’s going to happen. But I think we should have travel restrictions at this point in time coming from Africa,” Paul added.

Wednesday evening, the first Ebola patient in the U.S. was identified as Thomas Eric Duncan. Since then, questions have arisen about how Duncan got into the United States—and why President Obama’s administration has not, pursuant to sections of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) and other federal law, taken additional steps to protect Americans from this virus.

“The head of the CDC a month ago was saying it’s no big deal and that we needed to still have this conference that they were having in New York, but it’s like well gosh can we have a conference delayed for a couple months? If this thing takes off in a big city or God forbid our marines get it on a ship, all you got to do is if you’ve ever been on a Carnival cruise line and seen a virus spread on a Carnival cruise line, imagine what it’d be like on our military ships,” Paul said.

Because you base your point about Paul on the case of H1N1.

So, Paul had nothing to do with the H1N1 scare?

I don’t see how that injures his credentials on his ebola comments even a little bit.

This most recent outbreak started in December last year, 10 months ago, and has managed to infect <10,000 people, despite appallingly good conditions for spread in third world toilet slums. And even worse medical facilities.

The WHO and the CDC tell us that these numbers are underreported. These are verified numbers. The real numbers are assumed to be 3 or 4 times higher....

Let’s assume that is correct. It doesn’t change my point much as to the comparative spread of a truly contagious disease and Ebola.

I do hope you recognize the illogic of taking this statement of CDC and WHO as gospel while being intensely skeptical of other things they say. :)

Let me ask you a question I asked someone else on another thread...what is going to stop Ebola in Africa? There is no cure. The healthcare systems have collapsed because of it. Their economies are near collapse. What is going to stop it's spread? Why will it not kill millions?

It could. I also think it will not stay limited to Africa. People still haven’t internalized how utterly ineffective the procedures for keeping it there are.

As it presently stands, a person can be exposed today in Sierra Leone, be in Europe tomorrow and in USA the day after that, not becoming symptomatic and (theoretically) contagious till 19 days after his arrival in this country.

The “screening” by taking temperature is theater for the stupid, nothing more, like most “airline security.”

In a world of global rapid travel, diseases will themselves rapidly become global. Duhhh.

The threat may be minimal or it may be major, but in either case, it used to be zero before President Ebola, and it’s something greater than zero now.
