More… The media also released these shocking photos today:

Here’s another photo of the unprotected worker cleaning up Ebola vomit on the sidewalk with a power washer.

No, the I am not typically antigovernment but they have screwed this up. How the heck do you think doctors in full ebola gear get ebola?

Were the doctors in full PPE every hour of every day? Couldn't they have been exposed while not in PPE? Dr. Brantly does not believe he got Ebola while caring for patients.

I won’t post anymore to you about this but you need to up your research and think in common sense terms. CDC website on ebola easy to find - here is your link. And when it says not spread by water I don’t think they mean ebola vomit mixed with water.

I've been reading several scientific research articles about Ebola every day for months, now. I've actually kept up with the research on it for years. What I am trying to do is lay out the facts--not the suppositions, not the fearmongering, but the evidence-based facts. It doesn't help anyone to let them panic about touching a doorknob that someone with Ebola might have touched before they developed symptoms. But it does help people to understand what DOES and MIGHT cause Ebola, because having correct knowledge is how people can protect themselves.

The CDC, of course, is reading the exact same scientific journals that I read.

Ebola virus in water (contaminated by vomit) is not likely to survive because the pH and salt content are both wrong. A virus that lives in blood needs fluid that has the same properties as blood to survive. That does not include vomit-contaminated water.

Yes, that is a very important question. One might expect an orderly to get careless...but a doctor?

The handling of this is so effed up. It will a miracle if there isn’t a full outbreak in Dallas.

They'll get better at handling this. /s

Remember the movie "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure", they were going to save the world with their music, at the end of the movie they sucked at it. Their mentor said "They do get better!".

By the time government is handling their 100th case of ebola here they'll think to put gloves and masks on these underpaid servants. Or maybe the government will fund a $5 million dollar study on how to clean up vomit.

The saliva has the most virus early on, bloody or not, as the virus reproduces in the salivary glands (along with other glands). The only good thing about stomach contents is that the acid may kill a lot of the virus, but that vomit certainty had some quantity of virus in it. Blood has the most virus (loaded with it) because the virus attacks the inside of the blood vessels.

According to Bausch et al., J Infect Dis 2007; 196:S142–7, only one saliva sample of 8 that were positive by RT-PCR assay contained viable virus. So it would seem that saliva is *not* a major transmitter of Ebola. The virus preferentially reproduces in fibroblasts and endothelial cells; it also infects macrophages.

I am not aware of any good, solid, controlled study that establishes viral load in specific bodily fluids, likelihood of virus in any given fluid, duration of virus in any given fluid, etc. These studies desperately need to be done.

Anyone have any idea what they are washing off in the lower picture? it’s not the sidewalk, it’s something laying on the sidewalk.

I’m with you. Our govt is clueless. The CDC seems confused at best and outright lying at worst. Just assume that with Ebola as with sniping distance is your friend.

Actually that is not known.

It is known. If you are aware of any published research that shows otherwise, please post the reference, in the form of a link to PubMed or the PubMed ID number.

Ebola Family members not complying....

Police officers on Thursday took up posts outside the family’s Dallas apartment ‘to ensure compliance’ with an official order to stay, County Judge Clay Jenkins said in an afternoon news conference.

“They were non-compliant with requests to stay home,” said Jenkins, who did not elaborate.

"....the shedding of EBOV in saliva corresponded almost exactly to the period of viremia,..."

From that same paper, please note that only 2/3 of the tested samples contained virus detectable by RT-PCR--which only detects nucleic acids, and cannot differentiate between viable and dead virus. Out of those 8 samples positive by RT-PCR, virus could only be cultured out of one sample. That means that only 8.33% of the patients sampled had viable virus in their saliva.

In any case, you should not kiss or hug Ebola patients without full PPE.

exDemMom...quick question since you obviously have been following this closely. Dr. Gupta said on CNN about an hour ago in response to a question about immunity if one survives Ebola that there are five strains of Ebola currently active (pretty sure that’s what he said)...and that surviving one strain would make a person immune to that particular strain but he wasn’t sure about the others.

Do you know if the studies that have been done in the past are lumping all the Ebolas together or are specifically about this current one that seems to be the biggest threat? It’s hard to keep track of all the “news” that is coming out now.

Looks like a door mat.

No worries, as long as the guy doesn’t have sex with it, he can’t get infected.

Yes.

Viruses are limited in how much they can mutate, since they have to keep their ability to bind the cell surface receptors that they use to infect, and to co-opt the cell machinery they use to replicate. However, within their limits, they mutate quite readily.
