NBC News Freelancer in Africa Diagnosed with Ebola

An American freelance cameraman working for NBC News in Liberia has tested positive for Ebola and will be flown back to the United States for treatment.

The infected freelancer was hired Tuesday to be a second cameraman for NBC News Chief Medical Editor and Correspondent Dr. Nancy Snyderman. Snyderman is with three other NBC News employees on assignment in Monrovia, reporting on the Ebola outbreak.

The freelancer came down with symptoms on Wednesday, feeling tired and achy. As part of a routine temperature check, he discovered he was running a slight fever. He immediately quarantined himself and sought medical advice. On Thursday morning, the 33 year-old American went to a Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) treatment center to be tested for the virus. The positive result came back just under 12 hours later.

The cameraman, who also is a writer, is the fourth American to have contracted Ebola in Liberia. He has been working in Liberia on various projects for the past three years. NBC News is withholding the cameraman’s name at the request of his family.

Odd? Hired on Tuesday — feels ill on Wed — arrangements to fly back here on Thursday. Perhaps Snyderman saw a human interest story she can follow for us — nightly.

I hope NBC is paying for the 100 or so health workers that will be necessary to take care of him in isolation!

The entire crew coming back to stay in quarantine. Where in the U.S. are they all heading back to this time?

Yup. Is that the guy the Wahington Post reporter was talking about going into an area full of active cases but the WP guy refused and thought the photog was inviting sickness?

“From the article: We are consulting with the CDC, Medicins Sans Frontieres and others.
I see the group “Doctors without Borders” is going under a new nom de guerre.”

Medicins Sans Frontieres:
That’s French for Doctors without Borders.

Why on earth would Dr Nancy go to Liberia in the first place? Does she have a death wish?

Snyderman said weeks ago it was safe to fly because Ebola wasn’t airborne......

Per the article we had #1 Brantly and #2 Writebol admitted to Emry. #3 Sacra in Omaha. The first peep of news since Saturday about the #4 unnamed US doctor at Bethesda. But now there’s a previously unheard of (to me) #5 unnamed US doctor at Emry. Making Duncan #6 and now the camera crew dude #7. There were more suspected cases reported today from Hawaii, Kentucky, Utah, Toronto and more people in Dallas put under home isolation. Hey, no worries, obola’s got this under control.

Euthanize the entire MSNBC staff.

Not for Ebola. Because it's the right thing to do.

Thanks for pointing that fact out to me.
I just thought it was interesting that the media has taken to using different terminology than in the past.

Last week on the History 2 channel, they aired 3 Ebola hour long shows. I only saw one and the reported was all in the Ebola ick and wanting to get up close and personal. PPC garbed healthcare workers tried to keep him at a distance but you know how reporters are. They were spraying behind where he walked and all around his feet but he was oblivious. He and his crew hopped on a truck with dead bodies headed to a mass burial. The truck guys wore somewhat protective garb but not him. I’ve been waiting to hear if he or his crew would bring it back with them. Either this NBC guy was part of that crew or he’s another not so smart victim.

Aerosols, droplets, and all those things we have been assured were "safe" are my first suspicion. Fomite contact/transmission is a possibility, too. He may have rubbed his eyes or nose.

It is the little gestures that will kill, the unconscious ones people perform several times a day without even being aware they are doing it.
