He is probably right, though. His handling of the crisis in general painted him as weak in a dangerous world.
So people were ready for someone who was confident and unafraid.

Maybe but if I recall correctly the rescue plan had some pretty hairy details, like machine gunning crowds to get out if need be.
Plus Carter was an embarrassment and sucked in many additional ways.

It would have been sufficient for you to keep the Shah in power instead of undermining him
Blame much of the rise of Islamic fundamentalism on Carter and Zbegniew Brezinski. Without them it would have been delayed and more difficult.
