The information leaked by Edward Snowden last year raised the public consciousness quite a bit about user privacy and security in using certain services (not to mention the hope that companies wont be that willing to acquiesce to government requests for user information). In recent weeks, Apple CEO Tim Cook has been emphasizing a new focus on user security and encryption. Both Apple and Google have implemented stronger data encryption so its harder to compromise user data.
The problem is, however, that it would be harder for law enforcement to access that data too. And FBI Director James Comey isnt happy about it. He told reporters yesterday, I like and believe very much that we should have to obtain a warrant from an independent judge to be able to take the content of anyones closet or their smart phone. The notion that someone would market a closet that could never be opened even if it involves a case involving a child kidnapper and a court order to me does not make any sense.
Meanwhile, the chief of detectives for Chicago PD put things a little more bluntly:
Apple will become the phone of choice for the pedophile. The average pedophile at this point is probably thinking, Ive got to get an Apple phone.

>>Chicago Police Chief: iPhone the Phone of Choice for the Pedophile<<
I shall treasure that headline forever :)
I didn’t know that Harry Reid (allegedly) uses an iPhone...
> Presumed guilty until proven innocent...
That’s been the reality of the U.S. justice system for a long time now.
Has he put this much thought into the dozen or so fatal shootings that take place in his town each weekend?
I wonder how he feels about gun safes.
There is not enough details in that short article to tell what the issues are.
How predictable.
The “it’s for the children” arguments are ramping up.
I’m one of those who think they have nothing to hide, I’m a little OCD when it comes to following the rules but I also know that government is not to be trusted and if they want you they’ll get you.
Everyone has a right to privacy. It is just like in Jr. high when they punished the whole school because of a few bad kids. I don’t want to be punished for someone else’s crime by having my privacy taken away.
The chief failed his IQ test
1. Americans have the right to privacy.
2. Pedophiles can been caught, prosecuted and jailed WITHOUT forcing honest citizens to give up their privacy rights.
It's the same with our rights to own guns. Honest citizens don't have to give up their guns on the oft chance that it'll stop a criminal from committing a crime.
This is a new liberal meme... the newest emotional excuse to take away our rights...(in this case our privacy rights) brought to you by the same liberal elites who think Larry Flynt is a hero.
Ah, now I get it...
The chief dislikes the idea of gov’t agents, ie, him, not being able to crack into your private phone data.
It’s not about pedophiles - it’s about control of citizens.
Just like gun control isn’t about “gun violence”, it’s about controlling the law abiding.
You’re right...
No citizen is under any obligation to make it easy for the government to spy on him.
That said, anybody want to bet that Apple hasn’t quietly installed a back door for the feds, and this is just to give people a false sense of security?
“Has he put this much thought into the dozen or so fatal shootings that take place in his town each weekend?”
I’m sure he has a scheme on how to make use of them.
This coming from the Chief of a police dept. that hasn’t been honest since BEFORE Al Capone was running the City of Chicago.
