CDC Headed to Dallas in Advance of Ebola Results
Dallas Observer Blog ^ | Sep. 30 2014 | Stephen Young

The potential Ebola patient's test results are not in yet, but are expected later Tuesday afternoon or Tuesday evening. CDC personnel are on their way to Dallas in case either of the two samples from the patient being screened are positive for Ebola. If the test was to come back positive, the CDC would lead any actions necessary, with the county providing support, Thompson said.

First I have heard of CDC sending personnel BEFORE results are in. I would hate to think the CDC is already starting to shade the truth about Ebola in the US.

What I wonder about is how long was the guy walking around sick? Obviously he went to the hospital because he felt sick enough to go to the hospital. That's pretty darn sick. How long was he walking around?

Can you imagine Dallas tomorrow if they say “Hey, we have a few active cases out here!”

Yeah, it'll be just like today.

We still don’t want to quarantine travel from the countries, no, no, no, can’t do that, it would send the wrong message /s Better to send over troops, I received a dressing down on this forum last week for suggesting shutting down travel, but hey what do I know I’m just a dumb hick. Now we have a whole plane load of people potentially infected in the U.S.

They know the results.

This case illustrates (or is about to illustrate) the weakness in the “official position”, which implies that suspected cases can be managed differently than actual, proven cases.

As of two weeks ago, we got a high-sounding memo that said, in part, “all hospitals in the US must prepare to manage a patient with (or exposed to) Ebola”.

However, their management of actually existing cases is quite different from “routine” droplet, contact, and standard precautions.

If and when they announce that the Dallas patient has tested positive, there is going to be a s***storm that will, in all probabililty, disable this hospital for at least three weeks. For one thing, no licensed waste handler is going to pick up their trash (fact). EPA stands ready to ban on-site incineration. There will be exposed workers who have been having relations with spouses and boyfriends, and some sort of quarantine is going to have to be imposed.

Now, multiply by fifty or a hundred.

It is insanity to permit outbound flights from Monrovia, Conakry, Freetown, or Bamako.

Note that the dysfunction about to overtake us is not going to be caused by actual Ebola cases (I hope). It’s going to be caused by OSHA, by the EPA, by the Just Us Department, and fifty other regulatory agencies that don’t know any more about epidemiology than they know about f***ing (to quote e great man).

Work right across the street from the hospital. Press are gearing up for an announcement. Live just 5 minutes away. Knew it would be in the US one day, figures it’s in the neighborhood! If confirmed, think of who this person might have come into contact....airline, DFW airport, family, work, church...???!!

Makes me wonder if they have a result from one of the four hour quick tests. I can’t imagine the CDC going unless they were pretty sure they had a case and needed to start tracing contacts for containment.

“Makes me wonder if they have a result from one of the four hour quick tests.”

I’m not a betting woman, but I would definitely put money on this.

I’m sure the CDC now has the ability to pull up any passenger manifest whose plane lands in the US, at a minimum.

Bubbette, can you see the hospital, you say?

Press are gearing up for an announcement

So you can see press trucks from where you are? Would seem a bit early for them to be there unless an announcement was already scheduled?

Even more ridiculous is the local county health official’s comments regarding the situation; he basically came out and said that this patient posed no threat to the general public and that his office was “looking into how many people the patient may have come into contact with over the last few days.” And yes, the moron said this with a straight face...

Health and Human Services officials told commissioners that they had already begun an investigation to find people who had been in contact with the patient. Director Zachary Thompson said it was not unusual for the department to begin tracing contacts after being notified about a possible contagious disease. County nurse epidemiologists are tracking down the patient’s family members, friends and work colleagues, basically anyone who might have been exposed, if the virus is confirmed, he said.

The report was delivered after Health and Human Services officials cut short a presentation on the threat of an Ebola outbreak for a conference call with the CDC. “In general, the threat is minimal to the citizens of Dallas County,” Perkins said.
