So...what do they expect him to do? It is pretty obvious that he is already under the bus and the wheels are turning.

Anyone who is the target of a grand jury investigation should get counsel.
I would say it is more like an intelligent first step in trying to ensure they never get to that point.

Never walk into a courthouse without a lawyer. The people there may be friendly, but they are NOT your friends.
What are the legal ramifications of threatening an officer of the court?
He certainly SHOULD be represented by the police union’s attorney(s) just as any other cop involved in a legitimate line-of-duty incident.
he could hire me as is attorney and beat this stupid situation. The cop shot a strong armed robber who had just assaulted him and busted his face....that is called law enforcement....
