I was reading some where a while back thet the US in the European theater had fabricated their drop tanks for P-38s,47s,and 51 out of cellulose to prevent the Germans from doing the same thing

Never heard about that. Did some searching, and it was the Brits that came up with the idea out of necessity, with added benefit of not supplying the enemy.

Had to be filled just before takeoff, and not sturdy enough to survive a landing if the the mission was aborted/scrubbed.

One questionable application was making ice cream, taking it for a joy ride at 30,000 feet for a half hour.

Assuming the landing durability was correct, war time "milk" + other stuff would have a higher mass than the equivalent volume of fuel.
