Rosneft estimates 338 billion cubic meters of gas and 100 million tons of oil have just been found in a new field in the Kara Sea, drilled by the West Alpha semi-submersible drilling rig. Universitetskaya-1 is also the northernmost well in the world located in the icy waters 250 kilometers north of Russia.

Good make those sand countries less and less relevant in the world. We can sit back and let them kill each other without it affecting the economy.
I could have sworn, “peak oil” was to have wiped out the industrial world in 1989 then in 1999, then 2000-2005 (give or take). Of course, now combustion will cause the whole planet to cook (though they used to say it would freeze).

Mother Gaia obviously wants us to have lots of oil. Why don’t her worshipers rejoice?
When I was in college in 1970 I was told that we were rapidly depleting US oil reserves.
As has been noted by a few in all the years since, our energy issues are a political problem, not a resource problem.
Just with the amount of oil in service today, we will never run out. Oil not burned will be recycled forever through new technology.
If I were Putin, I would do as much as possible to stir up trouble in the Middle East, to keep the U. S. bogged down. Then continue building a large economic and military presence in the Arctic.
