The reason that Muslim countries have descended into chaos and violence is that Islamic culture is not compatible with the values, practices, institutions, social and scientific advances that constitute modernity. For the past one hundred years Islamic culture has been forced to confront modernity. It simply cannot adapt. Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Iraq and Iran are in turmoil and are unstable. Only the immense oil wealth of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states give merely the veneer of stability. The Islamic fundamentalists blame Western civilization in general and the specifically the United States and Israel for their troubles. However their problem lies within.
When Obama made his famous comment that bewildered people “cling to their guns and religion”, he was referring of course to white Christians who he despises. However his comments accurately portray the bizarre, barbaric jihadists who are fighting to restore the values, practices, and even dress of the 11th century. These reactionaries and their supporters are doomed to fail. However Western leaders must disavow their delusions about Islam and prepare for a long struggle. Eventually Islamic culture will transform because it must or it will perish. It will take a long and bloody time.

They are ultimately NOT doomed to fail. If America and Europe do not take the bull by the horns and expel their resident Moslems and take steps to deny Moslem societies the resources necessary to wage Jihad, then the Islamic project will succeed in the manner that it has succeeded in waves over the last 1400 years. Jihad may well burn itself out for a time but only after many gains have been made and the territorial base is even larger and the next expansion will explode out of that enlarged base.

Islam will either be pushed back and the territory under its control shrunk or it will expand. In its explosive phase,there is no stasis for Islam. We are experiencing that explosive phase now.

You realize that yours is a formula for perpetual war, with absolutely zero assurance that we will be victorious, don't you?

Why should Islam not be contained, to eat of its own poisoned fruit? You are correct, the Islamic nations have been FORCED to confront modernity. This is the same modernity that is causing Western states to commit suicide. And they don't like it.

Our first few tries at using the sons of modernity to conquer have not been successful. And our forces are weaker now than at any time in the past seventy years.

It's awfully bold of you to raise the flag of dying modernism ahead of a, you should pardon the word, crusade, to transform these people and their culture.

Why not kick them out, send them home, close their airports and their sea lanes, and let them have all the Islam they want?
