I think the problem in 2012 is that Romney's candidacy did not offer a clear alternative. He wouldn't even campaign for the "lower 47"%.

To switch someone's vote, there has to be a coherent reason why the alternative will be better, not just different.

I think Romney made a mistake. If he had picked up just 10% or so minority and lower middle class outliers, he would've won, I suspect.

I'll take it down to the Cleveland level. A message about how a Romney presidency would've helped self-employed and small business succeed and grow would've worked.

Had Romney just minimally championed a socially conservative message, he would have won by a landslide. Instead, he denigrated it.
