Seattle police aren't using enough force, internal memo says

Officers lament new use of force policy, established after DOJ report found pattern of excessive force.

A Seattle police department internal email said officers aren’t using enough force and that the softer approach could endanger both the police and the public, local media reported.

The letter, obtained by local television news network KIRO 7, comes amid a national dialogue on excessive force by law enforcement in the wake of racially-charged protests in Ferguson, Missouri, where black teenager Michael Brown was shot and killed by a white officer, Darrell Wilson, on Aug. 9.

But officers of the Seattle Police Department (SPD) argue a new policy on the use of force, which requires extensive reports following such incidents, is preventing them from doing their jobs.

“Some officers are very hesitant to use force in situations where force is clearly needed,” East Precinct Lt. Bryan Grenon wrote in the email, KIRO 7 reported Thursday. “Please communicate to our officers to use force when necessary to protect themselves, fellow officers, the public and the suspect from harm.”(continued)

Oh please. Boo hoo, police brutality. Ferguson is an example of what happens when it is not serious enough, not brutality.

We DO need more grown-up serious force. Overall. Indeed that and serious judges who grant them serious sentences in a “speedy” way. Catch and release doesn’t work.

If Al Jazera wants to bring up the “Gentle Giant” I'd bet the clothes on my back that while the evidence we already have suggests that deadly force was very possibly justified when *all* the evidence is in (cop's injuries, round fired in the cop car, etc) it will show that deadly force was *absolutely* justified....just as was proven during the George Zimmerman trial.

Boo hoo, police brutality.

Wow, how mature to mock a serious problem. Maybe if police beat you up you'd feel differently.

I think you could finish raping a woman on the sidewalk in Ann Arbor with police waiting because they’re so terrified of violating anyone’s rights.

Folks, can you blame some police officers for not wanting to use force, even when they are covered and mandated to?

Hell, Darren Wilson’s home was put on national TV and he fled for his life. Plain and simple. Thankfully he had no kids to pull out of school.

But his life will never be the same, and he used an appropriate amount of force.

Use the force necessary to get someone into cuffs. Cops have done this since day one. When dealing with a small pregnant lady this is probably something short of beating her senseless against the ground.

Today they seem to be using OVERWHELMING force at the drop of a hat.

Exactly what happens when you try to tell somebody how to do their job... it creates confusion with people who are trained to do something one way and then get told later to do it another... over time they don’t know what they can and cant do. Same reason the president or anybody else in Washington should not be micromanaging military commanders in the field. The saddest part is we never learn anything from past mistakes.

No, I’m saying I’m sick of all these accusations of police brutality when clearly the thug deserved it.

Ferguson is NOT a good example of brutality. Not from police, anyway.

Doesn’t Seattle have a female police chief now?

Kinda surprised at the strength of this memo.

"I call BS on this one."

Shows what a strange, warped bubble you live in.

Kris Kime could tell you about insane use of force policies that handcuff the police while letting thugs run wild... well, he could, if he wasn't murdered in front of a line of police officers because they weren't allowed to intervene for fear of showing up on camera "oppressing minorities".

Welcome to Seattle, home of the handcuffed police. As icing on the cake, some of those killers have been running around on the streets re-offending after their slap-on-the-wrist convictions for beating a good samaritan death.

Whoops! Wrong image, that's ANOTHER beating in Seattle that police didn't intervene in due to their use of force policies.

Here ya go:
