Pat Roberts asserts Va. home 'principal residence' in documents

U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts put a signature to documents associated with the mortgage on a Virginia residence that identify the Fairfax County home as “principal residence” of the three-term incumbent Republican.

The re-election campaign of the Kansan has been awash in controversy about whether his ownership of a duplex in Dodge City, which is rented out, and his payment of about $300 a month for a room in a Dodge City supporter's home satisfied legal requirements for public office.

On Wednesday, records surfaced that Roberts signed a Deed of Trust in 1997 and 2003 for property owned in Alexandria, Va., with his wife, Franki, that contained text about a principal residence.

The documents, which include a series of covenants, required Roberts to attest the couple within 60 days of executing the document “shall continue to occupy the property as borrower’s principal residence for at least one year after the date of occupancy.”

This is a quagmire. Perhaps Roberts should drop out of the race. He should have retired, given that he’s 80 y/o and lived in DC since the 1970’s.

His age is working against him as well as the feeling he’s out of touch with Kansas.

But the GOP insisted on nominating him and its too late to replace him with a younger and more attractive candidate.

I expect the independent to pick up the seat.

Extremely selfish of him. Very short-term thinking on the part of the GOP establishment. Why wouldn't they want to groom a successor to hold the seat for the next few decades?

This non-Kansan appears headed to yet another defeat of the GOPe’s selected “most electable (e.g., Tommy Thompson, Connie Mack, Heather Wilson, George Allen)” primary candidates. Well, hopefully Sarah Palin will be able to pull it out for the ungrateful GOPe RINOs who asked her to help.

At his age, the non-Kansan Roberts may die in office and be replaced with a true constitutional conservative from Kansas.

I know this sounds legalistic and it won't impress voters, but this is not a declaration of legal domicile. This is a very common provision and its purpose is to insure that the borrower will actually live in the house because a residential loan is being made and not a commercial loan.

Lenders don't want to make loans on residential terms, which are more favorable, to people who are buying rental housing, which is a riskier loan.

Is it not too late to replace a candidate?

It’s time to stop hand-wringing about this one and help conservative Senator Pat Roberts over the finish line.

For everyone dumb enough to call him a RINO I remind you the RINOS are endorsing the fake independent Ortman.

I blame that clueless tool Milton Wolf for dragging Roberts through the mud and dredging up this residency garbage. Now he and his supporters don’t seem to mind if a rat is elected.

You blame everyone except the Senator from Kansas who does not
live in his own home state.

You can blame the GOPe’s in DC from propping him up.

Broken record. My enemy is the rat party, including Ortman.

The RAT party did not prop Roberts up.

The DC GOPe’s did.

This is hardly news. Many Congressman have the exact same setups. It is no reason to replace him with a Leftist.

You’re right, it doesn’t impress.

Reps and (especially) Senators shouldn’t need to “live” in DC to do their ... ahem... public service. It’s all BS, and we all know it, and they all know it. It’s time to end the lifelong “career” on Capitol Hill.

Yup. Against lefty Orman, he stands no chance. Its one of the Democrats’ few Red State pick ups in a year when the political winds are against them.

Roberts did not have a viable primary opponent. Wolf would be trailing Ortman by 20 points right now. So whining about it is irrelevant.

He’s a conservative, he’s facing a rat who also has support from some RINOs, the choice is clear for everyone who isn’t a tomfool.

Roberts could have retired.
And the Kansas GOP could have sorted out the nominee, be it
Wolfe or someone else.

A Senator or Rep from the West who actually does his job has to live in DC or not see his family. On the other hand I’m aware of a couple of reps from safe districts who live in the district. They commute to Washington and work 3 1/2 day weeks.
