As a coworker said to me years ago (when AIDS was really becoming an issue):
It used to be that if you got something, you could get a shot for it & get over it. Along came herpes and you couldn't get rid of it, but you could live with it. Now there's AIDs and there's no cure for it and it kills you .... I'll stay monogamous & faithful to my wife, thank you very much.
Crude way to describe the situation, but fairly accurate. Now, with all the drug cocktails, HIV/AIDs is no longer an automatic death sentence - you can live years with it and I think that's the difference for "worsening" awareness .... if it's not necessarily going to kill you, the sodomites take the chance.
I remember when AIDs first hit and hubby and I were watching a news item about it. After the report was over, he looked at me and said, "Boy, am I glad I'm married".
