With that, my wife and her friends ran, but it didn’t occur to the new girl what was going on. The Black girls swarmed her like a pack of dogs and beat the living sh** out of her.

They abandoned her to die alone but the dogs, and I thing the term is quite appropriate here, did not kill her, presumably because they still feared the law then. There is a new sheriff in town now.

Actually, the problem was that they knew the “rules”. They knew what the girl’s remark would cause and scattered impulsively. It wasn’t about leaving anyone. It was about getting away from serious danger.
