Free Syrian Army Filmmaker Says Rebels ‘Laughing’ at U.S. Plan, ‘Don’t Take This Seriously’

A documentary filmmaker who spent time with the Free Syrian Army said that moderate rebels are “laughing” at President Obama’s plan to arm them against the Islamic State, claiming they simply “don’t take this seriously.”

Matthew VanDyke, an American filmmaker and a friend of executed journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, spoke with Fox News’s Shepard Smith about the White House’s plan to arm and train thousands of rebels affiliated with the Free Syrian Army, a more moderate rebel group that’s friendly with the West, in order to encourage them to fight the Islamic State.

VanDyke warned that removing the Islamic State from vast swathes of Syrian territory will create a “vacuum” that Assad-regime forces will rush to fill, leaving moderate rebels powerless to stop them. “When the administration announces that they intend to train 5,000 soldiers in Jordan, of the Free Syrian Army, to go and claim these territories, that figure doesn’t make any sense,” he said.

“It’s actually quite ridiculous,” the filmmaker continued. “I’m not sure how the administration even expects people to believe it.”

“Syrians on the ground are surely laughing at it,” VanDyke said. ”My contacts in Syria don’t take this seriously. They’re very concerned. They don’t want to be fighting the Assad regime’s battles for them by only going after ISIS.”

Obama McCain, and Boehner, are all responsible for misleading the American people.

There is only one thing the O admin wants. It is not ISIS, it is getting rid of Assad because the Saudis want him gone.

No way all those Arab countries are going to rid themselves of ISIS. The idea will be to create an incident where the US guns will be trained on Assad.

We are all being lied to, as usual.m Don’t ever expect the truth out of this admin. Everything is smoke and mirrors.

They will simply assume the FSA and still be ISIS.

This strategy is lacking in focus and will, imho.

We watched a successful degradation of resources in the Iraq war.

This has none of those earmarks: example: the initial airstrikes were in the middle of the night on empty centers. We knocked down antennae and blew out some windows. the staffs were back in camel town. These fighters do not have any sort of credible air defense threat or means besides a lucky break to hit our aircraft. What are we doing?

This will make 5,000 Syrians (plus their families) requesting political asylum in the USA.

This is exactly like GW I and II first night attacks except for the AAA. There is no element of surprise with a coalition in the initial strikes.

The killing will come with real time data acted on by drones and strike aircraft. I don’t know where this perception of a surprise leader-killing attack comes from. To my knowledge it’s never happened before and should not be held as a standard.

The killing will come over the next weeks and months as ISIS goes to ground or attempts to assemble for operations.

In concept is known as find-fix-destroy.

You break their stuff then you go after them. Same as GW I and II.

Ok...just seems silly when you know they have zero capability to stop you to attack at night...

I understand the concept and I understand how it happened in GWl and ll.

This is not striking a government. Its an army, true...but we should be in their face.

We’ll see how it plays out. My suspicion is they will melt into the populace and we have nothing to strike except a toyota here or there....

They will do that. If they cannot congregate and have to walk will they continue be an effective fighting force? If they’re not how will they be able to prosecute jihad or even defend themselves against their enemies?

The same way the Iraqis fought us for years. Terror, threats, bombings, intimidation of the populace, amphorus, swirling attacks that disappear when we show up.

They would be the definition of guerilla fighters. Our air power will be pretty useless...effective when we can but we were able to succeed only because we had ground assets.

I want it to work,,,but I do not think it will they way its being reported.
