President Obama today saluted his Marine Corps guard with a coffee cup as he descended to stairs of his Marine One chopper after landing in New York City.
The White House, either not caring about or not understanding the show of disrespect, actually posted video of the moment on Instagram.

I’d personally (if I were their NCO, or Officer in Charge of that detachment) I would have called them in in the first place and let them know first of all that they did their jobs, they did it well, and let the visual of this insult fall on the boss, and not let it get “you” down...
Your not necessarily saluting the man, you are saluting the office, which is more important than the temporary occupant who insults all of us...Blow it off and let’s keep doing our job...

The CIC is civilian and not required to salute.
That he ran back down the stairs and shook the Marines hand seemed very respectful and as if he apologized after realizing he hadn’t returned the salute.

I am of the opinion that if the President has never been in the military, he should never salute. Ever. They just screw it up anyway.
Bingo. Clinton reportedly took lessons, which didn't seem to help but at least he tried. And, too, it isn't always obvious to non-military people how inflammatory a sloppy salute really is. They think we're overreacting.

Agreed. He does not have to salute. Since he is not and never has served in the military, I prefer no salute. However, I would always say “Thank you, gentlemen” as I passed.
We would put him there a third time too, if it were legal to run for a third.
