Don’t worry. The U.S. Gubmint said if you like your Ebola, you can keep your Ebola.

Obama will work to make sure ebola is spread evenly throughout the US and Europe to make it fair.

“70%,” eh? That exposes some of the lies being told about the death rate. There’s no vaccine or cure, either. Researchers have been trying to find vaccines and cures for well over 30 years. Some of the treatments publicized are lacking evidence of effectiveness and are only produced extremely slowly. Preparing for personal quarantine and avoiding travel would probably be the best use of the short duration of time ahead.

Stocking up in the home place instead of planning vacations for a few years might be the best way to go.

No word yet which strain of Ebola is loose. Some of the more nasty strains have a mortality rate higher than 90%. The 70% figure sounds like an average.

Oddly, a rate over 90% can stop the spread of a disease if people die quickly and it burns itself out.

If it had a 50% rate then it would consume all medical resources for care of the recovering patients...there would be few resources available to try to stop the spread of the virus.

90% = earlier Ebola epidemics that burned themselves out.
50% = the Black Plague.
10% = the killer flu that went around the world during WW1.

That 70% figure caused me to remember that 25 years ago when I worked in West Africa the local population was estimated to be 40% HIV positive.

I shudder to think what the HIV rate is today in West Africa, but I wonder if their HIV compromised immune system has anything to do with their Ebola susceptibility.

African AIDs deaths are down to about 1.2 million a year now.

I wonder what the role of Vitamine K is in Ebola?

Not true at all, yet parroted endlessly. Once you are symptomatic enough to either be self-isolating, immobile, or so symptomatic that any rational person would avoid you, it makes no difference to the virus' long-term "plans" whether you live or die (although through dying, it opens up other vectors, which would help the virus, not hurt it). What matters is the period before that level of symptomatic-ness, to coin a phrase, occurs. That is going to be a function of a number of things, none of which includes whether the host ultimately dies or survives (although there may be an indirect relationship between fatality rate, and those other factors).

Well at least it is not at a crisis stage yet. As Nancy Pelosi would say “it’s just an upturn in the economy for morticians, coffin makers and cemeteries”.

Eeeee-bolllll-aaaaaa ping!

Bring Out Your Dead

We’re gonna need

a bigger cart!

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...
