Depends. US law says that an American traveling from point A to point B in the US with checked firearms (and no dope) when the gun ownership is legal in both endpoints is legal, despite any local ordinances to the contrary.
However, in NY and NJ (which are Federal law and Constitution free zones), if you get the bag from baggage claim to check in and transfer to another flight and the local cops are told there is a gun in the luggage, you will be arrested and charged.
Don't know about international flights: I strongly suspect if you are hunting abroad and have to go through customs in NY or NJ and then check in to another flight, there is a good chance you will be arrested.
Don't fly through Newark or any NY airport with a checked firearm.

"she had been ticketed to fly to Barbados."
Looks like she picked up the contraband here, in the States, and was headed to a once-British island in the Caribbean.

"Is it OK as long as its declared and theres no ammo with it, or what?"
A separate locked hard case.
Had to check a few long guns at Tampa airport back in 2000 - clerk asked me to open the case and clear the shotgun.
Man, when I racked that old Savage 12-gauge you should have seen the heads snap around....

Not sure about the ammo, but you can travel with a gun as long as it's in a locked carry case, unloaded and you hafta declare it when checking your luggage. NOT IN NY! If you show up with a firearm in your luggage in NY you will be arrested for breaking NY gun laws unless you hae a NYC carry permit. And only celebs, judges, and anti-gun politicians get those Happens on a regular basis

US law says that an American traveling from point A to point B in the US with checked firearms (and no dope) when the gun ownership is legal in both endpoints is legal, despite any local ordinances to the contrary. If states have ownership of the air above them, like auto travel need the traveler make sure all the states to be flown over are legal? Don't want a NJ situation to happen, as it did to Shaneen Allen.

I dated a girl who had this condition naturally. It was interesting to say the least.I could see how it could happen to anyone, but it's worse if it happens in New York City.

She went out of her way just to show up on camera.
Maybe they think she’d be better on “Naked and Afraid”.
