There is a difference, I think, between family being together and a family with no adults.

I was working for a paycheck when I was 13. Some kids on farms are doing real work before that age. Such steps toward being “grown up” don’t seem to be part of our culture.

Heck, consider the WW2 generation....off to war as late teens, early 20s.

Today, the picture of people that age are almost as far away from that as one can imagine. Worshipping the latest gadget from Apple is what I generally see them doing.

If not just your phone but your tv, your music, your friends and your work communications all came to you via that gadget from Apple, you might just be a little more fascinated with it yourself. They’re not all slackers and deadbeats, really not much worse than generations preceding. Employment prospects for recent college grads are still awful. Have a little empathy. What are they supposed to be doing, scrubbing the floors? Those jobs have been taken away by non citizens. So have just about all the sorts of jobs teenagers would usually have done in your recollection.

I think people are so afraid of lawyers, that no one allows anyone to do anything anymore.

When my sister's son was 12 I asked why he was watching his dad cut the grass? My sister felt he was to young to cut the grass. WHAT! Girls have to go to babysitting classed given by the Red Cross and get certified before they can sit. WHAT!

This is not helping ease kids into adulthood. I was cutting grass and baby sitting at 10! We can't even let them walk to school or ride a bike without a helmet.

So in short I don't think we can just blame the kids. How about the fact that from the time they are infants they are off to day care? Or we set them in front of the TV so we don't have to deal with them? If they are outside playing, then we have to get off our butts and go check on them to make sure no one took them. It's not all their fault.
