Well bubba, I am a Texan and have been going on 50 years now and you got it all wrong about lots of places in these parts where electric cars would be useful. Texas is hot, real hot and when you flip the switch for air conditioning in one of those cute lectric cars the useful range goes to the basement. Power required to turn an AC compressor is about 6-7 HP not counting the interior fan for circulation.
Range will almost be cut in half but when it gets cold the heaters kill range even more. So you can count any meaningful use of electric cars here a pipe dream unless it is just for momma to run to the grocery store.
But it never gets cold in TX. Or AZ, NM, LA, MS, AL, GA, FL, SC or NC!
And, by the way, you have to run the A/C in many states with the heat slightly on the prevent condensation on the windshields ....
Well, you’re probably right. Local climate conditions will impede the spread of the electric cars. Still there’s plenty enough places where the weather is good enough to give these cars room to grow if their prices come down.
Even a ten percent drop in demand will put a serious dent in oil prices.
I’m hoping this will not happen before 2020 because I want oil prices to stay high enough to allow fracking around the USA to continue growing production until the USA is oil independent.
I’m hoping that at some point OPEC will scale back production to keep prices high because they need high prices for to run their governments patronage system.
In any case, if electric cars are a hit—they won’t make a demand before 2020. If figure after 2020 or so oil prices are going to get ground down for many reasons—not least of which will be the change over to natural gas buildings trains trucks and buses.
