You are looking at the other side of the same coin. From a capitalistic point of view, why should taxpayers have to pay for someone that can pay for themselves is one part.
The part you present is where are now - the libs wanting to means test social security will lead to just what you are saying. Those that worked and saved frugally will be punished, while those that either didn’t work as hard or spend their money frivolously will be given a handout.
Both are problems in a society heading into socialism, where people quit trying to provide for themselves and expect government, ie others, to do it for them. Cases of inequity will occur over and over, riling up the responsible and self-sufficient. Happens every time I go grocery shopping and see the food stampers with their carts piled high with junk food, all name brand.
