There were hugs and tears in Vancouver International Airport on Wednesday evening.
“My baby’s safe, she’s home. I didn’t know if she was on a plane or not. Last I heard she was stranded on a roof somewhere,” said Debbie Reid, minutes after she was reunited with her daughter Jessica.
“It’s heart wrenching, not knowing where your baby is or your family member is. We didn’t even know if she was on the plane, and her phone was dead.
“But she’s safe now.”
Canadians that have been stranded in Cabo San Lucas since Hurricane Odile have begun to return home.
Sunwing Flight 576 arrived in Vancouver Wednesday night, while Sunwing Flight 578 arrived in Toronto early Thursday morning.
Sunwing also says they had 15 Alaska Airlines passengers and 24 West Jet guests on board the Vancouver flight.

While I’m sure it was a harrowing experience, especially for people completely unaccustomed, the damage is really not all that bad. The trees are largely still standing and not stripped of vegetation. The buildings shown have little to no structural damage other than broken windows. I’d imagine any shantytowns fared far worse, though. Flooding appears to be the major concern, from what I can see. That’s actually fairly minor as far as hurricanes go, some of which have altered geography and wiped towns completely off the map.

Looks to be a bit of a mess, but it’s just a little squall compared to a Westpac typhoon.
Actually the damage is extensive but varied. Some resorts have little damage besides some broken windows and seawall, others may need to be razed. What is not being reported is the massive amount of looting and the failure of military to protect residents and keep the peace. Similar to New Orleans after Katrina but worse.
As Thomas Hobbes observed, once the social order breaks down and people are desperate to meet basic needs like food & water, people will degenerate into animals in order to survive. Man in his natural state is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short.
I know somebody whose wife was caught in this. He wasn’t able to contact her at all. His only relief was that they weren’t reporting any dead and he took this to mean that she was all right.
The thing about photos like this. Often you’re seeing the worst picture they can find to send. One block over and there may be no flooding at all. Could be worse too.
It’s hard to gage what the real damage is.
I am often reminded that when there is a big earthquake out here, people back East see the press photo of the worst damage, and immediately think that damage goes on for miles and miles in all directions. It doesn’t.
The Northridge quake, possibly renamed afterwards, caused extreme damage in some areas, and yet a couple of blocks over there was minimal damage.
It’s strange how that works.
It was felt over a broad area of Southern California. The streak of damage did go on for ten to fifteen miles basically straight south. Off that line, it wasn’t terribly bad though, with some exceptions.
There is nothing worse than flooding, save SEVERE earthquakes.
Cabo didn't hurricane proof their buildings, i.e. Miami Dade building code (sis lives in Fort Lauderdale). The airport has extensive damage. No food, no water and no toilets. Check out the looting.
People are beginning to return from Cabo to Chicago. One old guy said it got so violent he was prepared to kill to survive. Another young guy walked a few miles to find food and was attacked by the famous Mexican feral dogs.
Sandy did that in my part of Virginia, but no one has ever heard about it.

True. I lived through the middle of Hurricane Celia over 40 years ago but didn’t want to bring it up as a comparison to the recent disaster in Mexico. Much later, the poor building and insurance disaster of Florida exposed after Hurricane Andrew started a weird trend of oneupmanship about disasters between competing financial interests.
I’ve noticed that too, although I haven’t lived through a hurricane.
