Most vets would probably pass a drug test too. I remember the random drug tests I went through for years on end. No use even trying to have an entire year without peeing in the bottle. Most of the time, it was every three or four months.

About half of the people I work with in the oilfield are veterans.

It is as the article states, in that the job requires long hours, sometimes extended periods away from home, remote locations, all sorts of weather, and everything from hard physical labor to consummate organizational skills.

Because the industry is always changing due to technological advances, learning is an ongoing thing.

The skill sets and ability to cope with the work environment make veterans a good fit.

The energy business requires brains and a good work ethic. Whether it is building pipelines, finding and drilling for oil or gas, selling or buying the molecule, controlling the flow, storing the molecule, etc. The average vet would fit right in. The Energy business is great and the pay is excellent. It beats flipping burgers any day of the week. ; )
