Terrorism raids: Isis 'urging followers to behead Australians', says PM

•Omarjan Azari, 22, charged with ‘preparing to commit a terrorist act’ •Plan was allegedly to behead random member of the public and film it •More than 800 officers in biggest counter-terrorism operation

•15 suspects detained •‘These people hate us for how we live,’ says Tony Abbott

A senior member of Islamic State was urging a network in Australia to carry out public beheadings, the prime minister has revealed, as a suspect was charged after the largest counter terrorism raids in Australia’s history.

More than 800 police officers were involved in raids in Sydney’s north-west on Thursday morning with 15 people detained.

“The exhortations, quite direct exhortations, were coming from an Australian, who is apparently quite senior in ISIL, to networks of support back in Australia to conduct demonstration killings here in this country.

“So this is not just suspicion, this is intent and that’s why the police and security agencies decided to act in the way they have,” he told reporters in Arnhem Land.

Abbott played down the possibility that Australia’s renewed involvement in Iraq would increase the chance of terror plots against Australian targets.

“These people, I regret to say, do not hate us for what we do, they hate us for who we are and how we live. That’s what makes us a target, the fact that we are different from their view of what an ideal society should look like, the fact that we are free, we are pluralist, we are tolerant, we are welcoming, we are accepting,” he said.

“All of these, in their eyes, are wrong and that’s what makes us a target and that’s something that should never change about us. We should always be a free, fair, open and tolerant country.”

This good, The US should be doing the same thing but we have weak leadership in our country. It will never happen until there is a strong moral leader to condemn the actions of those involved in this country.

That’s the problem Rusty - they only have to successful once while the Police need to be successful all the time - one has to take moves to protect themselves - as we cannot carry guns in public I intend to carry a weapon of some sort from now on not just to protect myself or my family or others but I refuse to be or feel intimidated by these evil b%stards!

We have stopped these people from going to the Middle East so now they want to kill people here. I say let them go to the Middle East and get killed there and if they are not killed never let them back in. They can remain nationless!

Apparently 60 Australians have gone to the Middle East to join ISIS!

A few of them have even carried out suicide bombings.

“Apparently 60 Australians have gone to the Middle East to join ISIS!”

Muslim Australians? Converts to Islam? Or just plain old Aussies. It makes a difference, you know.

I am seeing the prophecy regarding a certain “mark” of a Beast arising as we speak. It could be 50 years from now, it could be 5:(

Their strategy is simple and chilling. Spread terror in any way possible.

We have seen many jihadi attacks in the US. This act (video beheading) seems to be the new tactic they have arrived at. It is so simple, they don't have to set up networks or cells, the terror network is already in place. All they have to do is call for jihad. They have demonstrated the tactic, it just needs to be copied.

This will not end well because they will not give up.

We didn't. There are millions of firearms legally in private hands in Australia. Don't believe all the nonsense you've been told - various groups in America(on both sides of the gun issue) have deliberately misrepresented Australian gun laws for propaganda purposes at times. There are some dumb laws, but people can certainly own firearms - and I've been ready, perfectly legally, since the terror alert was upgraded to high last week to use my firearms if an appropriate situation arises (not that it is likely to, as thankfully, the authorities do seem on top of it).

You’re right, i think. That’s the approach the kurds have taken. Several weeks ago i read an article saying when they identify a kurd who is pro-IS willing to fight for them, they let the person go because if they stay chances are high they’ll cause damage inside iraqi kurdistan. For the ones in Australia, their aussie passport could be cancelled immediately after they leave. Although a problem is that these aspiring or actual fighters have also enablers & facilitators too who remain in Australia.
