I figured WILM. I left DOV in 84 and got out of radio in 86, but still had my periodic encounter with Biden until I left Delaware in 2003.
And as much as people knock Biden, in those days he was very accessable, one of the few politicians at that level that you might see at the mall or walking around town, and you could stop & say hello, shake his hand, and talk about issues. There’s something to be said for that, even if he turned out to be a liberal putz.
What did you do at WDOV? I wrote ad copy at WILM and did “The Nice Young Man” voice in a lot of spots, plus the requisite overnight/weekend airshifts. I also produced some of the “Happy Harry Pharmacy” and other ads that were on WDOV.
Best job I ever had, sharing an office with a talk show host, and surrounded by Telex printers with up-to-the-minute news! But it paid very little, and I didn’t have “the gift of gab” so I changed careers and went into tech writing.
Tom Carper was even more accessible than Biden back in the day, so much so that he was annoying! But you’re right, there is much to be said about the easy accessibility of the elected people in Delaware, especially back then.
I had the mid day news shift at both WDOV & WDSD, and I also covered the General Assembly, Dover City Council and Kent County Levy Court. I loved my work, but office politics created an environment I couldn’t handle anymore and so left and went to work for a small FM station in Caroline County, MD that was bought by some of the execs from the former owners of DOV/DSD to help create a news presence on the Eastern Shore.
When I was laid off from there in’86 I went on to become a writer/researcher for a lobbying and association firm back in Dover. About 6 months later I was offered the news Director position back at the station in MD, but as you stated, the pay was pathetic and I was totally enjoying what I was doing. By ‘88 I was on my own doing the lobbying and management.
I’m still self employed, but now I sell homemade jams, jellies, mustards, preserves, and pickles and do a bit of PR/advertising consulting. As much as I loved politics and the life, I got tired after 20+ years of it.
How many average joes ever use the word shylock?
Is the difference between a shylock and a loan-shark merely the ethnicity of the miscreant?
Well, Shylock expected it from Antonio, who asked for a loan but had no collateral, and he originally wasn’t serious (if I remember correctly) until he blamed Antonio for helping to steal his daughter and a small fortune from him.
