The Top Leaders Of A Navy Ship Were Fired In The Middle Of Their Deployment

The three top leaders of the guided missile destroyer USS James E. Williams (DDG-95) have been removed and reassigned halfway through the ship's deployment pending the outcome of an investigation into "command climate," the Navy said in a news release Tuesday.

The skipper, Cmdr. Curtis B. Calloway, was relieved at sea by Capt. Anthony L. Simmons, who will take charge of the ship for the rest of the deployment as an investigation moves forward. Calloway, along with Cmdr. Ed Handley, the executive officer, and Command Master Chief Travis Biswell, the top enlisted leader, have been reassigned to staff positions at Naval Surface Force Atlantic.

An unlucky ship IMO.

From Wiki FWIW:

In December 2009, 1½ months after the ship returned to Norfolk from a six-month cruise to the Mediterranean and Arabian seas, nine crewmembers were given non-judicial punishment for fraternization. Five of the nine were male chief petty officers while the other four were female junior enlisted sailors. The chiefs involved are being processed for separation from the Navy. In addition, the ship's skipper, Commander Paul Marquis, and top enlisted sailor, Command Master Chief Timothy Youell, were relieved of their positions and reassigned to shore-based administrative duties. Neither Marquis nor Youell are implicated in the fraternization cases or alleged sexual assault. Their failures are ones of leadership.

Furthermore, one other crew member faced criminal charges for sexual assault. Marquis' Executive Officer Cmdr. Daniel Sunvold, who was serving as executive officer on the James E. Williams, has been reassigned to the same position on the destroyer Bainbridge. He has not been implicated in any of the allegations.[10]

It was the first deployment for around a 100 sailors — almost a quarter of the 380 person crew.

Almost.

Its interesting that everyone on FreeRepublic is defending these guys with absolutely no idea what the facts are. During WWII, commanders were routinely relieved of duty when they weren’t up to snuff.

Perhaps this is a case of distrust in today's national leadership and the support will disappear if the facts, once disclosed, supported this action. I assume until proven otherwise that anything the thug in our White House does is wrong, so my initial assumption is that this was for pathetic political reasons. I could easily be convinced otherwise if evidence shows that the action was warranted.

Last night his security team was deploying barricades on Tampa and Jackson Streets near the hotel. Incredibly the entire security staff is of color. Even the guys handling the sniffing dogs.

So he finally got his private army?
Idi Amin veterans?

From Feb. 2013. Interesting list of officers being fired or relieved in the Navy.

Could not find an update for 2014 at Naval Times. Maybe someone can search for one.

The death of this young sailor, SN Yeshabel Villotcarrasco, 23, of Parma, OH, on that ship, whose husband and parents live in Puerto Rico, was reported on 28 July 2014.

Removing the three positions — commander, XO and CMC — almost all at once is exceedingly rare. No other details of the investigation were available and calls placed with Fleet Forces representatives were not immediately returned to USNI News.

FYI

The CMC made that rank in about 15 years of service. That’s pretty impressive, IMO. I hope the investigation keeps that from being all flushed away but the removal of all three senior leaders does not bode well.

Most recent navy cases were related to sexual harassment. I’m guessing this may now also extend to outed queers.

Fair enough. Do you know of ANY commander relieved in the past 6 years for pathetic political reasons? I’m not aware of any (doesn’t mean there aren’t some)
