While FDR accepted Stalin’s lies, I don’t lay blame at his feet for Stalin knowing about the Manhattan Project. Most of the espionage was done by Klaus Fuchs, and he was a package deal with the British scientists.

But Stalin was also wary that we would cut a deal with Hitler, too. He was a paranoid bastard, and figured we’d do just that.

Dug this out and rereading now.

The first few days of September, the German 15th Army is consolidating along the estuary. According to Moulton, there was a short window available to exploit the surprise capture of Antwerp proper, but the Allies were occupied elsewhere.

Oh, well.

Everything you say about British 2nd Army is true. The transport situation was temporary because of the acute gasoline supplies during the pursuit. The Americans did likewise; most of the heavy artillery was left west of the Seine so the trucks could be made into provisional transport companies.

But the little known truth is that Market-Garden is the last combat gasp of the British Empire. Monty had been told that there were no more replacements to be had. It was shown by cannibalizing 59th Division. After Market-Garden, the British contribution is much more limited and the U.S. Army will do all the heavy lifting.

Good reviews for that book.

That error will cost a lot of Canadian lives (among others).

The British will end the war broke and exhausted. The Empire is finished. It will take a while for the realization to set in, however.

The rapid advance through France is making SHAEF and the heads of government a little giddy.

Yes, way too much optimism. The Germans were never going to let us just walk into Germany. And our supply lines are stretched to the limit.

Thanks. I had never heard of large, as opposed to heavy cruisers. Beautiful design. 12” guns get respect.

But the Large Cruisers were totally pointless. Absolutely beautiful ships, yes. But an ermine violin would be beautiful too. We built the Alaska class battlecruisers (which is what they were) for the one reason that no one else did.

Because we could.
