In Iowa, attacks on Republican Ernst change dynamics of tight Senate race

When Joni Ernst burst into public consciousness here this past spring, she was talking about castrating hogs as a child on an Iowa farm. Another ad showed her wearing a leather jacket and stepping off a Harley-Davidson to point a pistol at the camera.

Well, meet the new Joni Ernst. Iowa’s Republican Senate nominee went on the air this week with an ad in which she sits at a kitchen table, speaks directly to the camera, and says she cares about protecting Social Security, good schools, good-paying jobs and affordable health care.

Ernst’s effort to project a more moderate image reflects what Democrats say is a shift in the dynamic in one of the closest and most contentious midterm campaigns in the country. In Iowa — which Republicans have looked to as a potential insurance policy for taking control of the Senate — the debate increasingly has centered on issues that could give Democrats the edge.

The question is whether Iowa is part of a broader political shift in other competitive states that would allow Democrats to maintain their Senate majority, even if by the slimmest of margins.

The key ought not just to be appealing on other issues, the key also includes tying these sycophant Demon Rats to Barack Hussein Obama, the singularly worst occupant of the Oval Office in the history of our republic.

What part of McConnell’s vow to ‘Crush them wherever we find them” and “Not have a single candidate anywhere on the ballot” did Conservatives fail to understand the Oligarchy meant?

And we are lectured even now to “vote more Republicans” - as long as they have an “R’ it doesn’t matter we are told. Win the Senate now, deal with the Oligarchy later they say in rote to the practice of insanity.

Two quick thoughts:

  1. If the Pubs were smart, they would hammer home the fact that a electing a Rat, any Rat, will result in a continuation of the radical socialistic nightmare led by Obozo and Dirty Harry.

  2. Do you really believe anything published in the Washington ComPost, one of the main Rat house organs and prime spewers of leftist propaganda?

What issues give dems the edge? Taxes are not high enough, health care is not destroyed, to anyone with two brain cells clicking together, there are no issues like that.

I have spent my entire life in sales & marketing. I now work on advertising every single day...creating “impressions.” That is a terrible ad, as are most when a candidate (who is not a natural actor), speaks directly into the camera on a “sincere” note.

Bring back the motorcycle riding “Soldier.” When she won the Primary, that was the impression that people had of her...and she was LEADING in the first polls. They need to have that persona directly take on the lying attack ads that all manner of Liberal groups have been running against her. Something like “I’ve been to places where I had a REAL target on my back...these scumbags are nothing.”

On a separate note, David Young’s ads are even worse; shockingly bad.

The guy running the campaign now is a Romney shop, pro-Gay Marriage, anti-SoCon by the name of David Kochel. That’s what happened.

No matter which party or candidate they’re working for, the overwhelming majority of inside-the-beltway political consultants are liberal.

Guess who they’ll vote for on Election Day?

Part of that is because Young finished FIFTH in his primary. Nobody wanted him to be the nominee so he is having serious problems raining money. Ernst's ad campaign is getting progressively worse as time goes on. Their campaign managers/ad folks need to be fired, pronto.

For all his flaws, Mitch McConnell has done exactly what you've listed for #1 in his Kentucky race, and has been very effective at it. He has actually crafted himself as the "refreshing candidate for change" against a 35 year-old woman by hammering on one key point:

"How can my opponent call herself a force for change in Washington when the first thing she'll do as a Senator is vote to re-elect Harry Reid as the Senate majority leader?"

Here's a great example of what I was referring to in post 8:

[...]

Even though Republicans may take back the Senate by running against President Barack Obama's executive amnesty, John Feehery argued that Republicans must not oppose Obama and ram through amnesty if they control Congress.

[...]

As Breitbart News has noted, "Feehery has supported Arlen Specter over Pat Toomey and favored Charlie Crist over Marco Rubio," and he "works at a lobbying firm founded by a Bill Clinton adviser who persuaded Clinton to infamously pardon Marc Rich."

Feehery wrote that "Republicans will gain more for their brand by proving they can govern than they will in continuing to oppose the president," and that is why they should no longer view Obama as the enemy. Feehery's theory is that Republicans will take back the White House in 2016 only if they "prove they can run the country in 2014 — and they can only do that with the cooperation of President Obama."

If Ernst is creating ads like this. She’s in trouble.

Never go on defense. Especially when Dems should be playing D.

The best ad I ever saw defending this stuff was Scott Brown back in 2010.

The ad started off with a video of a Dem attack, rambling on about how Brown hates people etc. Brown pushes aside the video, moving it off screen. He then takes up whole screen w white background and basically calls the Democrats a bunch of liars who are unable to run on their record of failed policies.

Ernst is a RINO.

She won the Republican Primary by talking like a conservative.

Now she is running like a moderate.

If elected, she will vote like Lisa Murkowski and Kelly Ayotte.

How can McConnell position himself as such when McConnell himself said the first thing he will do is EMPOWER Harry Reid and the Democrats with reverting the filibuster rule to hand them what was taken away from the Republicans?

What's the difference between voting FOR Reid, and empowering Reid via stealth and subterfuge while playing 'opposition leader' for the cameras?
