Contradicting Obama, Dempsey Calls for Iraq Ground Operation

US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey told the Congress on Tuesday that he recommends deploying US ground forces against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq, in a direct contradiction of US President Barack Obama's largely hands off approach.

Speaking before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Dempsey backed the coalition being formed against ISIS, but said if the limited airstrikes do not stop ISIS's advance he would push Obama to take the attack to the ground, reports the New York Times.

"My view at this point is that this coalition is the appropriate way forward. ...But if it fails...then I of course would go back to the president and make a recommendation that may include the use of US military ground forces," said Dempsey.

Obama just last week in his speech about the ISIS threat said he was sending military advisers to aid local Iraqi and Kurdish forces, but emphasized "these American forces will not have a combat mission - we will not get dragged into another ground war in Iraq."

In response to the position, Dempsey told Congress that Obama's "stated policy is that we will not have US forces in ground combat." However, he added that Obama "has told me as well to come back to him on a case-by-case basis."

Dempsey argued that realities on the ground may make Obama's limited airstrikes insufficient.

The General openly contradicts his CIC position.

Truman fired McArthur for such insubordination.

What a train wreck this whole thing is. And it hasn’t even barely begun.

Dempsey has said Obama told him to come to him on a case-by-case basis if the air strikes fail to achieve. In other words, he’ll eventually get the green light for ground troops in combat. It’s when, not if, because the air strikes cannot achieve anything without ground troops to solidify gains, and the Iraqi national troops have a lousy track record. They were the ones who lost the country in the first place.

Who, in this administration, is competent to run a ground war in Iraq? All the people who know what they're doing have been forced out and incompetence is in-charge.

I really do pity our service men and women assigned to this goat roping exercise.

Obie had wanted the troops to wear flip flops...to express the casual nature of our ::visit"....but NO ONE at the pentagon warmed up to that brilliant plan

Dempsey might be competent, but nobody reliable has his back. This whole thing would have been avoidable if Obama hadn’t made such a point of abruptly disengaging from Iraq.

You can clean ISIS out for $31,000,000 dollars. You put a bounty on every Isis “head” that is brought in with proof it was an ISIS person, and you give the beheader $1,000. If the beheader is caught cheating, he gets beheaded. Just K.I.S.S. is all we need. I think they would understand the rules ... it is the same rules by which they are playing.

The boots hit the ground when a pilot gets shot down and falls into the hands of ISIS. Then, all bets BETTER be off.

All very true, but he [Obama] did do that. I'm not confidant in Dempsey, but he's go no backup from the idiots Obama has surrounded himself in this administration. Barry has created the perfect storm of a disaster of monumental size in terms of American lives, reputation, and treasure. Obama cannot even speak the name of our enemy, Islam, because he's on their side in this fight. Problem is the power brokers in Washington, DC cannot or will not see this.

I’d be willing to give Dempsey a chance to prove himself. But the backbiters, buttkissers, and cynical demagogues have already gotten out their long knives because he dared to contradict Obama. Beheading video to follow. Bounty to be furtively paid. He has no chance.
