Obama seeks faster phaseout of popular coolant in effort to curb greenhouse gases

The Obama administration is preparing to introduce major steps to phase out production of a popular chemical coolant used in refrigerators and air conditioners, citing growing evidence that the substance is contributing to the warming of the planet.

The White House will announce on Tuesday a series of voluntary commitments by some of the country’s largest chemical firms and retailers to move rapidly away from R-134a and similar compounds used in nearly every office, home and automobile in the country, according to current and former U.S. officials familiar with the effort.

another "save the planet" scandal! another power grab from the EPA, i have been working with R134 Freon in automobiles since the early nineties and NOW all of a sudden it's dangerous to the environment and needs to be phased out immediately. what a crock! The refrigerant they want to replace R134 with is highly flammable! and CARBON based. R22 in home AC is on the chopping block also! The R134 will be like the R12 was back in the day and jump to ridiculous prices and be sold on the 'black market' so stock up while it's cheap and available imo.

Obola demands the new coolant be a mixture of plutonium
and EV-68, which will be made by his “children” in IS.

Yet he will probably continue to use it at the WH. Now Baraq wants to punish His people by getting rid of their AC so they have to live as they do in the middle east in villages without any AC. He’s doing his very best to make life a living hell in the U. S. any way he can.

As always, the eco-nuts tell us that whatever we are using is horrible and we must stop. We must use this other product instead. After a few years they tell us that the product they insist we use is horrible and the cycle repeats. I am beginning to wonder if this a a tactic to manipulate the stock market, short the current product, demonize it and go long on the substitute product.

The food NAZI’s use the same tactics, remember transfats?

How many of you think that our insurance rates will go sky-rocketing and that we will then need mandatory ‘fire suppression’ systems retrofitted into our houses plus mandatory yearly fire-inspections?

And as an added bonus, Gun-owners can expect to go on ‘lists’ too if guns are discovered during those inspections.

If he is so committed to eliminating that coolant then he should ban air conditioning in all federal buildings.

As per Agenda21/Sustainable Development, aka the U.N.’s “Plan for the 21st Century” which is now govt. policy: air conditioning is “not sustainable”.

Don't they mean “refrigerant” not “coolant”?

Here they go again! This resurrects a very deep hatred of the environazis with me, they cost me my career in refrigeration as I am allergic to the concocted, legally mandated replacement for Freon. What really pisses me off is the fact it was only banned here, the rest of the world still used CFC’s and AFAIK still do! Bastards, the lot!

“Maurice Strong, Secretary-general of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro said, “. . . Current lifestyles and consumption patterns of the affluent middle class – involving high meat consumption and large amounts of frozen and convenience foods, use of fossil fuels, appliances, home and workplace air-conditioning, and suburban housing are not sustainable.” A shift is necessary which will require a vast strengthening of the multilateral system, including the United Nations.

In other words, the Global plan is for us to live on the level of third world nations. That means limited use of fuel of any kind (we will ride bicycles instead of riding in automobiles), no air-conditioning, and we will all be forced to live in tiny apartments in tenement buildings in the middle of a city”.

A patent must be running out! We are only using this stuff because it was mandated to replace the old Freon which was said to be destroying the Big O zone or some such crap. It never worked as well as Freon. I wouldn’t be surprised if someday they find a way to change some little detail and get a new patent on Freon and then we have to go back to it. All about money folks, all about money. If we all decided to just live in a tent to avoid all this garbage that would be illegal too.

Non-scientist here. What is the name of this replacement coolant? And, where does Puron fall into all this. I switched to puron years ago when they told us freon was being outlawed and no longer allowed. Is that now going to be outlawed?

The German automobile manufacturers have determined that the proposed replacement HFO-1234yf has a significant risk of causing a fire in front end collisions. In the event of a fire, the product converts to trifluoroacetic acid and hydrofluoric acid, two highly toxic substances. As a result, they are not using it.

Gasoline is highly flammable, too. No big deal. Flammability isn’t the problem with me, it’s the lying bastards’ incessant new demands. Freon was bad, so we got Puron, which was touted as the magical answer. Now, on a whim of Obastard and his EPA cronies, Puron is no good. It isn’t our coolants that need replaced, it’s our government and its leadership!
