They do if they want to see classified information that affects how they do their job.
Being surrounded by communists, including his communist grandparents would’ve precluded him from having Top Secret clearance, and possibly even Secret clearance. Even confidential is questionable, given his close association with terrorist Bill Ayers and his murderous Weather Underground.
