A tip is a reward for some extraordinary service, payment for a favor done for you. Doing your job does not warrant a tip, and pushing for it is obnoxious.

If the maids require a higher salary, the hotel can pay them one - and tax them appropriately. If I slip that money in an envelope, it's tax free. I don't have that luxury, why should they?
