Bible May Solve Colossal Ancient Iceberg Riddle

by Brian Thomas, M.S. *

What is the recipe for making an iceberg? Scientists know the basics from watching polar-ice sheets. Huge chunks calve, slide off, and float away as icebergs. But that’s for modern icebergs. New research reveals evidence of ancient icebergs that would dwarf today’s frozen floating mountains, leaving secular explanations out in the cold.

Researchers from Germany’s Alfred-Wegener Institute (AWI), Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, published in Geophysical Research Letters their discovery of five deep scours at almost 4,000 feet below sea level and about 250 miles off Greenland’s eastern coast at Hovgaard Ridge.1 There, the Fram Strait permits polar ice to enter one of the world’s larger oceans, an annual process that helps regulate marine ecosystems and global weather patterns.

I would imagine that when the Ice Age was starting to come to an end, the sea levels was much, much lower and the ice bergs were humongous, perhaps miles high....................

One older theory is that as the North American glacial cap began to melt, a chunk of several thousand square miles slid off the top and into the North Atlantic, blocking the Gulf Stream and causing the Yonger-Dryas cooling period.

Assuming a biblical timeline, massive amounts of volcanic activity took place during the Flood year and immediately afterward.

Since this happened after the Flood, you should be able to dig anywhere in the world where the soil hasn't been excavated or eroded down to bedrock and consistently find a layer of volcanic ash.

Assuming a Biblical timeline, there were no oceans pre-deluge. The so-called “fountains of the great deep” would not contain salt water, therefore it came from outside the system.

Also under these assumptions, derived from Biblical descriptions, the climate was stable and verging upon tropical, so icebergs were not part of the equation due to that alone. Not to mention, there were no large bodies of surface water or even rain/snow required to form icebergs.

So, if this is to be taken as some sort of effect from the Biblical deluge, it occurred many years afterward. A very significant geological disturbance of some kind would be necessary to break off huge sheets of the polar icecap and send them scraping across the ocean floor and eventually adrift, I’d imagine.

Proverbs 8:29

" When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:"

The oceans and the (free) water of the world ... in whatever form ... is established and will not change.

Occasionally an ice cube overflows the glass from the refrigerator door and falls on the floor

Assuming a Biblical timeline, there were no oceans pre-deluge.

The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. -Genesis 1:2

Are we to assume these waters did not constitute one or more oceans?

Pretty sure there were oceans before the flood.

The debatable variance is in where the oceans were located and how deep they were.

The Laurentine ice sheet was typically a mile thick. Given the 3-to-1 ratio of below to above water for an iceberg this would account for scrapes on the ocean floor 4,000 below current sea level.

The math:

Mile of ice = 5,280 feet
3/4 under water = 3960 feet submerged

Remove 330 feet from current sea level to account for the lower glacial sea level.

3960- + 330’ = 4290’

Voilà -a scrapped sea floor 4,000 below the current sea level.

“Waters” can mean a number of things. The topic is debatable as to just what conditions are being described Biblically, let alone beliefs outside of that, from science or elsewhere.

However, if there were large bodies of surface water, there would be evaporation. Evaporation would mean clouds, clouds would mean rain. There was no rain, plant life was watered via mists that arose from the ground.

There were also no rainbows. That was a covenant from God, to never again destroy the world by flood.

Taken together, this means that there were no oceans. Others disagree.

The recipe for making an Ice Age calls for hot oceans and a colder atmosphere.

Exactly, what you would get if the Arctic ice cap melted. More precipitation over the Arctic land masses.

The first thing I noticed was the name of the German institute whose discoveries were being misrepresented. Alfred Wegener was a meteorologist who veered into geology and came up with the idea of continental drift and provided proof of its existence. He was not the first to notice that the continents seemed to fit together, Abraham Ortelius, a cartographer in the 1500, was the first but Wegener was the first to offer convincing proof.

However, Wegener could not supply the mechanism for continental movement. That had to wait for WWII and the sonar mapping of the ocean floor and further for satellite imagery. The sonar mapping showed the existence of mid ocean ridges which were shown to be volcanically active, dividing and pushing the ocean crust apart creating new ocean floors. Also, deep ocean trenches were found that allowed for the old ocean floor to be sub-ducted beneath continental crusts. Further, the plate movements were in balance. Wegener was vindicated. Old earth was further evidenced and explained.

Returning to the German institute, their findings and publications hardly seem to ever contemplate a young earth. For instance, their research on the ice ages, as recently published, concentrate on the last 100,000 years and the succession of ice ages and warm spells:

Over the past one hundred thousand years cold temperatures largely prevailed over the planet in what is known as the last ice age. However, the cold period was repeatedly interrupted by much warmer climate conditions. Scientists have long attempted to find out why these drastic temperature jumps of up to ten degrees took place in the far northern latitudes within just a few decades. Now, for the first time, a group of researchers at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), have been able to reconstruct these climate changes during the last ice age using a series of model simulations. The surprising finding is that minor variations in the ice sheet size can be sufficient to trigger abrupt climate changes. The new study was published online in the scientific journal Nature last week and will be appearing in the 21 August print issue.

The ICR's misuse and distortion of other peoples research is best illustrated in Dr. Andrew Snelling's garbage geology. I think he may be responsible for the unsupportable theories of intense volcanism following a worldwide flood which flat out never happened. He has all the granite cooling rapidly and being exposed by erosion over a mere 100 or so years.

I will say that the ICR "scientists" are very active and imaginative con artists who delight in keep their enemies in biology, geology, chemistry, etc. running around to disprove their absurdities.

Brian Thomas (MS) is doing his best to justify his paycheck. He throws as big a steaming pile as he can hoping that someone - anyone is just dumb enough to jump in behind him on the off chance that they may have a gotcha moment to cudgel real science with.

Jim - refuting the stupidity is a waste of time. For crying out loud - we have people claiming rainbows never happened before the end of the flood....

What worries me is that according to opinion polls, anywhere from 30% on up of otherwise rational people believe this young earth stuff. Stable and conscientious families are where most of the future scientists, engineers and medical people are expected to come from. We need them.
