Exclusive: Nissan faces battery plant cuts as electric car hopes fade

(Reuters) - Nissan (7201.T) boss Carlos Ghosn is preparing to cut battery manufacturing, people familiar with the matter said, in a new reversal on electric cars that has reopened deep divisions with alliance partner Renault (RENA.PA).

The plan, which faces stiff resistance within the Japanese carmaker, would see U.S. and British production phased out and a reduced output of next-generation batteries concentrated at its domestic plant, two alliance sources told Reuters...

Global electric car sales will remain shy of 1 million in 2020, according to forecaster IHS Automotive, less than one percent of the total vehicle market, and one-tenth of the demand Ghosn had predicted.

You mean peopled didn't want to buy these over-priced, POS electric cars? What a surprise.

I think electric vehicles are the way of the future, but battery tech is not there yet. It will catch up.
Also, the EV industry must survive without subsidies. Same goes for solar and wind.

Fuel cells would be better than a battery.

An honest comparison of the environmental impact of an electric car versus a gas car, from the first step of construction until the end of its effects on the earth, would show that electric cars are far, far more environmentally damaging than any gas car.

market, and is not going to be mainstream anytime soon.

If you are an urban commuter, limited range isn't so much of an issue for your daily drive, however it is an issue if you only have one car... Because you will want to use that car for more than just commuting.... So, these type of vehicles can serve as fleet vehicles for some industries with limited geographic footprint needs and as secondary cars for urban commuters with enough disposable income to want one.

Reality is, that footprint is small, very small, and not likely to change anytime soon.

They also come with a whole lot of limitations beyond just range, that combustion cars are not limited by. So, end of the day they are nice hobby/toys for a certain niche in the marketplace. Ever believing a car that cannot be refueled in minutes and get you at least 250-300 miles before it needs another filling at least was going to mainstream, especially in the US was naive.

And lets not even get into the limitations the technology puts on the vehicle:

Avoid exposing a vehicle to ambient temperatures above 120 °F (49 °C) for over 24 hours.

Can't be someplace too hot.

Avoid storing a vehicle in temperatures below −13 °F (−25 °C) for over 7 days.

Cant be someplace too cold

Avoid exceeding 70% to 80% state of charge when using frequent (more than once per week) fast or quick charging.

If you ever find yourself in need of a QUICK charge, you shouldn't fully charge the vehicle this way if you do it frequently or risk damaging the battery.

Allow the battery charge to go below 80% before charging.

You know you are going to need 100% charge to make your trip, but you are currently at 85% charge, you are supposed to drive it around or something to burn off 5% before you recharge it.

Avoid leaving the vehicle for over 14 days where the Li-ion battery available charge gauge reaches a zero or near zero (state of charge).

Never ever let it reach zero and sit there for a while.

Someday these limitations might be dealt with, but for now they aren't.

Price is the other problem, for a niche market 35k is just too high for the limitations that come with it for most people... Get that price into the 10k-15k range or less and you could get reasonable sales as a secondary/commuter car.... But at 35k you are priced way out of any chance for most folks to consider it.

People are just too mean. If they were only more patriotic and would get behind manufacturers that are intending to improve the environment, maybe there'd be enough critical mass to improve the technology and the prices!

Could be. Depends where the technology goes. And it's still electricity, just another way to produce it.

Yes, but without having to wait for charging or dealing with a battery with a diminishing charge capacity. Fuel cells are also pretty potent and compact.
