Scientists say the extent of Antarctic sea ice cover is at its highest level since records began.
Satellite imagery reveals an area of about 20 million square kilometres covered by sea ice around the Antarctic continent.
Jan Lieser from the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) said the discovery was made two days ago.
"This is an area covered by sea ice which we've never seen from space before," he said.

If these asshats were honest(yeah, fat chance there) they'd be pushing to keep things warm. Guess they never tried growing corn in Antarctica. I hear the growing season is REAL short.
Eventually “climate scientists” will have to concede that the Russians have been correct from the beginning. Artic ice thickness has more to do with the activity underwater artic volcanoes or smokers and not infinitesimally small changes in atmospheric temperature.
Caused , of course, by global warming!
It’s not the extent of the ice it’s the ice depth that matters and if that turns out to be above normal it’s being caused by the ocean sucking all the excess warmth out of the air and if that’s not the case then one years data is not climate you bone-heads.

However, I will bet you a steak dinner accompanied by a nice Merlot that the AGW/climate change power-hungry types will shortly be spinning this.
You see, spring/summer is coming to the southern hemisphere, right? It stands to reason the ice will melt off to normal or near normal levels. Since there is more ice (record levels) it will probably require record level melting to get back down to normal summer ice levels or near the normal summer ice levels.
So the record buildup will be ignored, but shortly we'll be hearing about record amounts of ice melting in the antarctic. You watch.
I can see the headlines now. “As Summer Nears, Massive Ice Melt Forecast For Antarctica Due To AGW.” Yup. Those dang snow machines are wreaking havoc on penguin habitat.
The lefties won’t spin it. They simply won’t believe it. I had this discussion with the office Chicken Little last week.
And quite frankly, the lefties aren’t real up to date on which hemisphere in north/south...nor do they have a complete understanding that the ‘OMG we’re melting’ photos of missing Arctic ice is in the summer...and that it comes back in the winter.
And if you are able to establish with them that it isn’t warming, they whip out ‘climate change’, because ‘storms are getting worse’. And that’s a whole new topic to educate them on.
In short, they really don’t want to know.
Because... well...
OH! Because global warming is causing fresh water land ice to melt, pour into the ocean, diluting it and making it more easily freezable.
Whew... almost had me for a second there.

The Russians are right about climate change because they don’t depend on our EPA for fat grants to push the government’s power grab using phony “science.”

Al Gore was wrong about the ice melting... now the game will be to explain how global warming caused there to be MORE ice.
And MORE polar bears.
Yep, Al Gore’s true believers will come up with something - an excuse - no matter how stupid - and all the warmist cult members will buy it...
You forgot the part about whatever he comes up with will make his bank account grow.
What really matters is the volume of hot air and hysteria coming from the Global Warmists and there is more than enough of that to make up for the "unexpected" increase of ice.
Also, despite what you hear in the news, global sea ice is right at the 35-year average. It has not massively shrunk.
