...Obama will visit U.S. Central Command, headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base, on Wednesday for a briefing from his commanders on battle plans against the Sunni insurgent group Islamic State.
....White House officials made it clear that there would also be no U.S. military forces on the ground in Syria to coordinate airstrikes, nor have any done so in Iraq.
But as the President continues to coalesce U.S. and international efforts to “degrade and ultimately defeat” IS, and Pentagon officials say they are making headway against IS in Iraq, two former Centcom commanders offer mixed reviews of his plans.
“I am confused,” said Anthony Zinni, a retired Marine general who led Centcom from 1997 to 2000, in an interview Friday.
Zinni is not confident that indigenous combat forces will be sufficient.
“Who are we leading?” he asked. “Will it be the Kurds and Iraqis and Syrian opposition and American lead and American command and control?

The issue, he said, is not with John Allen, who served as acting Centcom commander before taking charge of all U.S. forces in Afghanistan prior to retiring. The issue, said Zinni, is why that position was needed.
“John Allen is a great guy, but does it take a retired general to coordinate a coalition? What is Centcom, chopped liver? Did Norman Schwarzkopf get some retired general? Who is really leading here, that is my question.”
So why is this ISIL going to CENTCOM? To shut it down?
