As Ebola Cases Accelerate, Liberia's Sick Must Fend for Themselves

SNIP

With each day, the small group of caregivers trying to cope with the worst outbreak of Ebola on record falls further and further behind as the pace of the virus’s transmission rapidly accelerates. Health facilities are full, and an increasing number of infected people are being turned away, left to fend for themselves.

SNIP

The sick arrive each day, hopeful that their timing and symptoms will get them past the gate. Even so, 7 in 10 will die inside, slightly better odds than the 9 in 10 who are dying in the community, Madden said.

SNIP

Across Monrovia, such breakdowns in basic services are common. Schools are closed. Aside from the delivery of children, it is almost impossible to get any kind of medical care that would require a hospital, because Ebola has overwhelmed the system.

Few people are working. They have been told to stay home, to help slow transmission of the virus, which means that no money is coming in for basics such as food. People say they are relying on handouts from family and friends and hustling for a few dollars.

Seventy percent mortality WITH treatment. Ninety percent without. Medical system overwhelmed. If (or maybe WHEN) this happens in America how many ebola infected people will be sitting in emergency rooms and doctors offices and infecting others?

Be careful out there....

It would be the same in the US when one of obola’s extra special infected patients or recent African arrivals exposes others.

I tend to say that enough Americans will isolate themselves to prevent the spread.

If the virus becomes aerosolized, all bets are off. It will be like the Spanish flu of 1918.

Hard to say what the odds are. But it seems to me much more real a risk that global warming or other things that preoccupy the politicians.

If the virus becomes aerosolized, all bets are off. It will be like the Spanish flu of 1918.

By way of comparison the mortality rate of the Spanish Flu was 2.5%. That's two and half percent. On average 2 and 1/2 people out of every 100 would die.

With the current strain of Ebola 70 out of every 100 die WITH treatment. Ninety out of a hundred are dying without treatment.

Spanish Flu infected 28% of Americans. If Ebola infects 28% of Americans today that would mean about 89 million people catch Ebola. If 70% of them died, that would mean that about 62.5 million people would be dead in the US alone. That's somewhere around 1/5 of all Americans would be dead if Ebola spread to just 28% of the population.

Eeeee-bolllll-aaaaaa ping!

Bring Out Your Dead

We’re gonna need

a bigger cart!

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

It isn't if, it looks like it already can be transmitted this way: http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/lab-bio/res/psds-ftss/ebola-eng.php

I'm over cautious by nature. I'm among the group that is stocking enough food, health, entertainment and home maintainance supplies to be able to self-quarantine for three months if necessary. I'm surprised how many people are doing the same.

I don't know a practical way to store enough water if the supply becomes compromised or is turned off.

That is a hard one if you live in a city. Store as much bottled water as possible and then if you have room get a 55 gallon trash can and fill it with water and treat it with bleach every week. Put a tablecloth over it and pretend it is part of the décor.

Unless you happen to be in a hospital and the knuckleheads insist on bringing the Ebola patients in there while you’re getting chemo or some other treatment. Surprise! We have an Ebola patient on the floor above you and 2 above the cafeteria. Not to worry though.......
