Iraqi Prime Minister Disbands Seven Shiite Militia Groups

Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Abadi has reversed key decisions of former PM of Iraq Nouri al-Maliki by halting the activities of several Shiite militia groups.

Abadi has pledged to stop the activities of seven Shiite militia groups in Baghdad while at the same time indicated that he cannot impose his authority on two Shiite militia groups, which report to Maliki.

He revealed that some internal decisions that were made by the former Iraqi council of ministries must be amended and reviewed so that nobody can take authoritarian decisions alone. He decided to annul some of Maliki’s decisions.

It is also expected that a list of people who were employed or chosen for office positions by Maliki will be sent to the Iraqi Parliament in order to be reviewed and altered, if needed.

“Abadi, in front of Shiite National Alliance leaders Ibrahim Jaafari, Adel Abdul-Mahdi, and Ahmed Chalabi, has pledged to high Sunni leader in Iraq Ayad Allawi that he will give complete authority to Allawi for making peace in the country,” said Shiite National Alliance MP in Baghdad Kazim Shammari.

“Abadi has pledged to give Allawi some other responsibilities in regards to internal and external relations,” added Shammari.

He continued, “Allawi won’t be successful in creating peace if he doesn’t have full authority.”

It appears he's attempting to make bridges with the Sunnis. We'll see.

"Make bridges? ISIS is Sunni."

The Sunni tribes in Iraq siding/fighting with ISIS.

They have to be convinced by Baghdad that they are not going to get the shaft again before they break with ISIS.

A friend suggested that it might clear up some confusion if in the future, we started the Internet meme referring to ISIS as “Thuggee”. The Thuggee were the infamous robbery-murder cult in India known for their indiscriminate massacre strangling of victims. Though mostly Hindus, they also had Muslims and others in their membership.

Nominally worshipers of the goddess Kali,

they carried out a reign of terror in India until the British systematically wiped them out, then wiped them out a second time when the survivors tried to resurrect the cult. Something the British did that was appreciated by just about everyone else in India.

To call ISIS Thuggee, is something of a double insult to them as well as those who called them “moderates”. It also sneers at Muslims who adamantly refuse to condemn other Muslims, no matter how disgusting.

I don’t know what to make of how this is written, it mentions the Sunni Leader, Ayad Allawi. Allawi is a Shia, and was the PM of the interim government. Though it doesn’t change the nature of the article, it’s a mistake that is easily avoidable.
