Pressure grows for Obama to arm Ukraine
The Hill ^ | 09/14/14 | Martin Matishak

Senior Democrats are pressing President Obama to announce increased military aid for Ukraine when that country's leader visits Washington next week.

The lawmakers want the U.S. to provide lethal aid, including ammunition and small arms, to Ukraine’s military in the wake of Russia’s recent incursions into the country. They also want to green-light training for Kiev’s troops.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko will be in Washington on Thursday. He will speak to a joint session of Congress that morning and meet with Obama in the afternoon, according to the Ukrainian embassy.

Many Republicans have long pushed for lethal aid to Ukraine but a growing number of lawmakers from the president’s own party are joining those calls. They believe Poroshenko’s visit can help ramp up pressure on the administration.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.), who visited Ukraine earlier this month, said Poroshenko’s visit would be a “good opportunity” for Obama to change his long-held position that there is no military solution to the conflict between Kiev and Moscow.

It would be an act of war against Russia if the U.S. did so.

Insane.

I agree. The power facts on the ground are that Russia is right there. So's the EU. We're far, far away.

But, never fear, O likes Communism, although he probably doesn't think Putin is doing it right. So, unless he's really just an agent provocateur for Islam hoping to weaken the US/EU and the USSR with conflict (a possibility), he'll just blow hot air and fold.

Ukraine is just a typical old-fashioned border dispute, in a lot of ways, and while those things can certainly be vicious and set off greater conflicts, they can be resolved politically. There have been disputes between Russia and Ukraine practically since the beginning of the modern nation-states.

The EU and Putin and the Ukrainian nationalists should sit down and try to work this out. Our getting involved by giving weapons to yet another uncontrollable bunch of “nationalists” is hardly the solution.

That said, the reason Obama wants to go after Putin is that Russia is supporting Assad against Obama’s beloved “rebel groups,” most of whom are either openly or secretly allied with ISIS.

It would be an act of war against Russia if the U.S. did so.

Uh, if memory serves, the U.S. signed a treaty to assist in the defense of Ukraine if they were to dismantles and remove their Russian nukes. Of course, the idiots voted into office a limp-wristed, narcissistic, panty waist who is disinterested in everything outside of the perks of the position of president.

..."the U.S. signed a treaty to assist in the defense of Ukraine if they were to dismantles and remove their Russian nukes."

Just asking, because I don't know - was there an actual treaty, ratified by the Senate and all that, or was it just some b.s. "memorandum of understanding" type thing?

Any excuse to get more arms to his Moose Slime brothers, whom he sides with.

Your post makes no sense.

Obama (like some here)doesn't want to arm Ukraine.

Ukraine is not Muslim, but Russia is.

Other than that, great post. /

It was not a treaty, but the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances, which was only a political agreement, and not a ratified treaty. Therefore it is not worth the paper it was written on, and the Ukrainians were foolish enough to sign it and give up their nukes.

Ukraine is not Muslim,

It could be some day. ISIS to Turkey via Caucasus, Ukraine. All you need is a weakened Russia. The map is interesting
