The Wyoming Department of Corrections should be able to employ a firing squad to execute condemned inmates if the state can't find the drugs to carry out lethal injections, a legislative committee voted Friday.
There's been talk this year about reinstituting the firing squad in Utah. That state outlawed execution by firing squad in 2004, but kept it as an option for inmates convicted before that time. It last executed an inmate by firing squad in 2010.
Linda Burp, director of the ACLU in Wyoming, said the United States stands with such nations as China, Iraq and Syria in continuing to employ the death penalty. "The reason that we are here today is because most Western nations do not believe in the death penalty," Burp said.

As Marvin Gaye said; “Let’s Get It On!”
But that would mean they’d use:
GUNS!...............................
Director of the ACLU in Wyoming must be an awfully lonely job. It must be like a crzy sh*thouse rat trying to run things in what is arguably the sanest state in the union.
"I'm Gary Gilmore and I approve this message"
The local ACLU leader has the unfortunate name of Linda Burp. That sort of brings out the second grader in me. I can imagine her being called on the playground back in grade school “Linda!! (followed by a very loud, very long) BUUUURRRRPPP!”
I have never been comfortable with lethal injection.
I do not like the health profession being so involved.
I think we find an abandoned old building of 10 floors or more. Put the accused in the elevator shaft in the basement. Open all of the other elevator doors.
Give all the crime victims who wish to show up a bowling ball or two. have them all roll their bowling balls towards the door until the convicted jerk is dead!
Linda Burp can go pound sand ...
And the State of Wyoming should consider that dry nitrogen gas is dirt cheap, and does not support life.
It’s time to bring back the public hanging.
Sounds good to me. Quick, clean and non-medical.
why do this?
just hang them. it’s over quick. rope and gallows are reusable. sheesh. with a tight noose and a good drop it will not take any longer than the chemicals need to work, or inhaling a lethal gas. it’s hardly worth counting as target practice because it’s not challenging to hit a stationary target that close.
Not that committing a capital crime is on my to-do list, I’d request being hung so that my organs could be used to help other people.
Then again, perhaps such concern is why committing a capital crime is not on my to-do list.
linda, all that proves is that most western nations can still agree to be wrong about an issue.
and 150-200 years ago they all had the death penalty. was it right then, linda, when they all agreed they should have the death penalty? are our morals just whatever most people think is right at the time?
if so it means nothing. popularity is not morality.
Yeah, I’m still mystified why nobody has gone over to a nitrogen gas chamber. Minimal cost. No suffering (not that I am adverse to suffering for many of these scumbags, but there are the constitutional considerations). No need for a medical professional to administer anything, just to check for no pulse at the end.
Strap them into a chair in a sealed room. Pump in nitrogen to displace all the air. Wait an hour or two (yes it is overly long, but there’s always those yogi mystic types). Take them back out and convert to ash. Done and done.
I agree with hanging.
Death by firing squad has too much romance attached to it.
The type of death should be such that it makes grown men shudder.
What I don’t get is the whole coctail thing. Every day a million people on the planet fall asleep under anesthesia and wake up with zero memory of even being asleep.
Use more of the same stuff. Simple. Lethal. Permanant.
Or just a 30.06 to the forehead. Even faster, jokes aside. A brain splattered on a wall in a microsecond cannot ‘feel’ anything.
Hanging for civil capital crimes, firing squads for military capital crimes.
And as gruesome as it sounds and looks, the Guillotine was created by the French as a way to ensure quick, painless death every time.
And children. The local school kids should be paraded in formation to witness the event. It may have a salutary effect on their future lives.
Nitrogen Asphyxiation :
1 breathing mask
1 air regulator
1 tank of 99% pure nitrogen (common welding gas)
1 brain wave monitor
Strap the condemned to a chair.
Place the brain wave monitor over the head.
Place the breathing mask over the mouth and nose.
Flow 1.1 atmospheres of nitrogen.
Condemned goes to sleep.
Wait till the brain wave monitor goes flat.
i would guess since they have to have a doc there to officially mark time of death/confirm death, and with the push from the left not only to end the death penalty but in short of that, ban ‘cruel’ executions, they came up with this method. because first is sedation. then the second one which may put them deeper. then the potassium chloride which stops the heart. if they came up with a way to do it that the left couldn’t object to b/c the criminal didn’t feel any pain, they could keep doing executions wihtout the left being able to challenge it on those grounds.
note BURPs main lead argument is “most other western nations don’t have the death penalty”. total shift off “cruel punishment”. Far weaker argument from a legal standpoint. Defense: And MS BURP if all the other western nations decided to jump off a bridge,...
