If Scotland can secede, so can Texas

Global markets are suddenly jittery about the prospect that Scotland, after 307 years as part of the United Kingdom, could become its own country if Scots vote for independence in a Sept. 18 referendum. If proud but tiny Scotland can do it — which polls suggest is a distinct possibility — then America’s 28th state, Texas, will certainly take notice.

If any state is fed up with the rest of America, it’s Texas. Republican Gov. Rick Perry floated the idea of seceding from the United States in 2009, though he later backpedaled. A petition for Texas to “withdraw" from the United States, lodged on the White House’s “We the People” Web page, gathered 125,000 signatures before voting closed in 2013. A group called the Texas Nationalist Movement has nearly 190,000 likes on Facebook.

Because the US would be considerably worse off. With Texas, we might well be able to work to change the US for the better. If Texas leaves, it’ll be harder for us in the rest of the US.

So? Other red states could form their own separate Union as well, a Union voluntarily joined can be voluntarily left. A look at the US debt clock shows that the US, as it currently exists, is already doomed. All that is left to be determined is how hard the Union will fall. I, for one, don’t want Texas to suffer for the foolish mistakes of leftist states.

I wish American Conservatives, Libertarians, and Constitutionalists well, but the Union is not a suicide pact, and for Texas to stay would be suicidal. If liberty is doomed to die in America, then at least it can survive in Texas.

I’ll have to check that one out. I see that it came out in 2000 and I just know some of his older work. Novus Ordo Seclorum, Alexander Hamilton, E Pluribus Unum. Requiem was maybe my favorite but I like everything of his that I’ve read.
